Easter – Celebrating Families
Today, we celebrate the glorious feast of the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Today, we repeatedly extol and rejoice in the Risen Christ’s final victory over sin and death.
Today, we sing a hymn of victory, for in our Lord’s Passover from death to live, Christ our God has brought us from earth to heaven.
Truly, “this is the day that the Lord has made; let us exalt and rejoice in it!”
As we celebrate Easter this year, let us focus in particular on celebrating families and their role in evangelization, that is, the sharing of the Good News of the Gospel message.
On that first Easter, the Good News of the Resurrection of Our Lord was first received by Mary Magdalene and the other women who went to the tomb. Upon their arrival, an angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised [from the dead], as he said” (Matthew 28: 5-6).
The angel continues:
“Go quickly and tell his disciples, he has been raised from the dead… This is my message for you. So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples” (Mt 28: 6-7).
For over two thousand years, from one generation to the next, from one family to another, we continue to tell the Good News of Jesus’ resurrection and his victory over sin and death.
The family is the domestic church. Here the seeds of faith are first sown. Parents, by their word and example, carry on the mission of love entrusted to them by God, sharing that love among themselves and teaching their children to love God and neighbour.
This year, Pope Francis invites us and the entire Church to pray for families, especially as he prepares to gather with families from around the world this September in Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families, then in October in Rome for the Papal Synod on the theme of families and their role in evangelization.
Earlier this year, Pope Francis wrote:
“[This year] We will reflect in particular on the family, which is the fundamental cell of society. From the beginning the Creator blessed man and woman so that they might be fruitful and multiply, and so the family then is an image of the Holy Trinity in the world.
“Our reflections must keep before us the beauty of the family and marriage, the greatness of this human reality which is so simple and yet so rich, consisting of joys and hopes, of struggles and sufferings, as is the whole of life.
“We are called to acknowledge how beautiful, true, and good it is to start a family, to be a family today; and how indispensable the family is for the life of the world and for the future of humanity.
“We are called to make known God’s magnificent plan for the family and to help spouses joyfully experience this plan in their lives, as well as accompany them amidst so many difficulties” (Remarks to the Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals, February 20, 2014).
In another letter to families, Pope Francis writes:
“I am writing this letter to you on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple.
“The evangelist Luke tells us that the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph, in keeping with the Law of Moses, took the Baby Jesus to the temple to offer him to the Lord, and that an elderly man and woman, Simeon and Anna, moved by the Holy Spirit, went to meet them and acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah (cf. Lk 2:22-38).
“Simeon took him in his arms and thanked God that he had finally ‘seen’ salvation. Anna, despite her advanced age, found new vigour and began to speak to everyone about the Baby. It is a beautiful image: two young parents and two elderly people, brought together by Jesus.
“[Jesus] is the one who brings together and unites generations! He is the inexhaustible font of that love which overcomes every occasion of self-absorption, solitude, and sadness.
“In your journey as a family, you share so many beautiful moments: meals, rest, housework, leisure, prayer, trips and pilgrimages, and times of mutual support… Nevertheless, if there is no love then there is no joy, and authentic love comes to us from Jesus. He offers us his word, which illuminates our path; he gives us the Bread of life which sustains us on our journey” (February 2, 2014).
Similarly, Pope Benedict XVI wrote: “Falling in love is a wonderful thing… I often think of the wedding feast of Cana [where Jesus performed his first sign or miracle, changing water into wine]. The first wine is very fine: This is falling in love. But it does not last until the end: A second wine has to come later, it has to ferment and grow, to mature. The definitive love that can truly become this second wine is more wonderful still; it is better than the first wine. And this is what we must seek” (World Meeting of Families, Milan, 2012).
Why is it that today we are often content in settling for second best – an earthly life, where God is ignored or even forgotten – when God our Father offers us his very best – the absolute best wine – His Son, Jesus Christ, who gives us the gift of eternal life.
On this holy day of the Resurrection of our Lord, we pray that God’s grace and love fills the hearts of all families in their role in evangelization, and brings joy and peace to all people.

Пасха – Свято Родини
Сьогодні ми святкуємо величне свято – Воскресіння Нашого Господа Ісуса Христа.
Сьогодні ми знову і знову повторяємо Христос Воскрес і радіємо оснаточній перемозі над гріхом та смертю.
Сьогодні ми співаємо гімн перемоги, бо Господня Пасха перенесла нас від смерті до життя, Христос наш Бог переніс нас із землі на небеса.
Це дійсно «день що його сотворив Господь; возрадуємось і возвеселімось в ньому!»
Під час святкування цьогорічного Великодня, зосередьмось особливо на наших родинах і на їх ролі в поширенні Доброї Новини Євангелії.
Під час першого Великодня, Добра Новина про Воскресіння Нашого Господа була спершу отримана Марією Магдалиною та іншими жінками, які разом з нею пішли до гробу. Коли вони наблизились до місця поховання ангел з’явився їм і сказав: «Не бійтеся, я знаю, що ви шукаєте за Ісусом, який був розп’ятим. Його тут немає; він воскрес, промовив ангел.» (Мт. 28: 5-6).
Після того ангел сказав: «Ідіть швидко і скажіть його учням, що він воскрес із мертвих… Це моя вістка для вас. Отож, вони швидко залишили гріб і зі страхом та великою радістю побігли щоб сповістити апостолів» (Мт. 28: 6-7).
Ось вже понад дві тисячі років, від покоління до покоління і від родини до родини ми продовжуємо звіщати Добру Новину Ісусового Воскресіння і його перемогу над гріхом та смертю.
Родина є домашньою церквою. Саме тут зерно віри є вперше посіяне. Батьки через особисті слова та приклад власного життя продовжують місію любові, яка є їм доручена Богом. Вони розділяють цю любов між собою та вчать дітей любити Бога та ближнього.
Цього року Папа Франциск запрошує нас і цілу Церкву молитися за родини. Особливо він просить молитися за родини в часі приготування до двох важливих подій: Всесвітнього З’їзду Родин, який відбудеться цього вересня у Філадельфії та Папського Синоду на тему ролі родин в євангелізації світу, який відбудеться в жовтні у Римі. Під час цих зібрань Папа Франциск зустрінеться з родинами з усього світу.
Нещодавно Папа Франциск написав:
«Цього року ми особливо будемо роздумувати про родину, яка є основною клітиною суспільства. Від самих початків Творець поблагословив чоловіка та жінку щоб вони були плідними та помножувались і щоб таким чином родина була образом Пресвятої Трійці у світі.
Наші роздуми повинні розкривати перед нами красу родини та подружжя, величності цієї людської реальності, яка є одночасно дуже простою і надзвичайно багатою, яка складається і з радостей і надій, а також з труднощів та страждань, як і ціле життя.
Ми є покликані визнати наскільки гарним, правдивим та добрим почином є сімейне життя та наскільки незамінимою є родина для життя світу та людського майбутнього.
Ми є покликаними сповістити про чудовий задум Божий для сім’ї та допомогти подружжю радісно пережити цей задум Божий у їхньому житті та супроводити їх під час їхніх численних труднощів.» (Замітки із Надзвичайної Консисторії Кардиналів, 20-го лютого, 2014).
В іншому листі до родини Папа Франциск звертається:
«Пишу цей лист до Вас у свято Стрітення Господнього.
Євангелист Лука нам говорить, що Богородиця і Святий Йосиф дотримуючись закону Мойсея, принесли дитятко Ісуса до храму, щоб пожертвувати його Господу, і що старенькі чоловік та жінка, Симеон та Анна, зворушені Святим Духом пішли щоб їх зустріти і визнали, що Ісус є Місією (Лк. 2: 22-38).
Симеон взяв його на руки та подякував Богу за те, що він нарешті побачив спасіння. Анна, не зважаючи на свій похилий вік отримала запал, щоб кожному розповідати про Дитя. Це є гарний образ: двоє молодих батьків та двоє старців зустрілися разом завдяки Ісусу.
Ісус є тим хто зводить разом та об’єднує покоління! Він є невичерпним джерелом любові, яка долає егоцентричність, самотність та смуток.
У вашій сімейній мандрівці є стільки гарних моментів: спільна їжа, відпочинок, домашня робота, молитва, подорожі та паломництва, час взаємної підтримки… однак тоді коли немає любові немає і радості, а правдива любов приходить до нас від Ісуса. Він жертвує нам своє слово, яке просвічує нашу дорогу та дає нам Хліб життя, який підтримує нас у дорозі» (2 лютого, 2014)
Папа Венедикт XVI також подібно висловився:
«Закохуватись це є чудово… я часто роздумую про свято в Кані Галилейській (де Ісус здійснив своє перше чудо, перемінивши воду на вино). Закоханісьть, як і перше вино є дуже доброю. Однак цього першого вина не вистачить до кінця: наступне вино повинно надійти пізніше, воно має перебродити і дозріти. Зріла любов здатна дійсно стати цим наступним вином, яке на смак навіть краще за попереднє. Це те, що ми повинні шукати» (Світовий З’їзд Родин, Мілан, 2012)
Запитаймо себе чому в сьогоднішній час ми часто задовільняємось не найкращим вином, а життям, в якому Бог є проігнорованим, або навіть забутим. Бог наш Батько дає нам найкраще вино – свого Сина Ісуса Христа, який який в свою чергу дає нам дар життя вічного.
В цей всятий день Воскресіння Господнього, ми молимось щоб Бог у своїх ласці і любові наповнив серця наших родин для місії євангелізації та приніс їм та усім людям радість та мир.
