COOKVILLE – St. JOHN the BAPTIST Parish – Парафія св. Івана Хрестителя

Location: 12 km. from Redwater. First Divine Liturgy was held by Fr. Matthew Hura in the house of I. Lakusta.. The building of the church started in 1904 and was completed in 1911. The 2 acre parcel for the cemetery was acquired in 1904 and blessed by Fr. Strocky, OSBM. The parishioners contracted a carpenter by the name Edwood. Founders of the community were: N. Makovetskyi, S. Yakymets, I. Lakusta, I. Romaniuk, V. Romaniuk, I. Slota, N. Romaniuk. In 1940 there were 40 members. Fr. George Zydan acquired a new church bell. There were many Basilian Fathers serving the congregation from Mundare and Edmonton. Later, a more stable pastoral situation emerged: Fr. George Zydan, OSBM (1936); Fr. Matthew Sianchuk, OSBM (1937); Fr. Peter Iwanec (1950-1952). In 1952 the Cookville Parish joined the newly established Parish of Sts. Borys and Hlib. Later the church was dismantled.
