The WHAT, WHY, and HOW of the Kiss of Peace in the Divine Liturgy

Restoring a Sacred Tradition in Our Parishes

For centuries, the Kiss of Peace was a vital part of the Divine Liturgy—a beautiful expression of reconciliation, love, and unity in Christ. However, for reasons unknown, this practice disappeared from both Eastern and Western traditions after the 14th century.

In recent years, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing has further distanced us from this ancient Christian expression of peace and brotherhood. Now, as we fully return to in-person worship, the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton invites all parishioners to revive this sacred tradition as a sign of love, unity, and preparation to receive the Eucharist worthily.

What is the Kiss of Peace?

The Kiss of Peace was an integral part of early Christian worship, long before distinctions between Eastern and Western rites. It was a visible, public act of reconciliation and unity among those who shared the same faith.

This sacred gesture symbolizes:
Reconciliation – A reminder that we must be at peace with one another before approaching the Eucharist.
Mutual Love – A visible sign of Christ’s commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 15:12).
Unity in Christ – A profession in which we are all members of the Body of Christ and share the same faith.

Unfortunately, this practice faded from both Eastern and Western traditions in the late Middle Ages. Now, the Church is calling for its restoration in our liturgical life.

Why Restore the Kiss of Peace?

Jesus teaches that love and forgiveness are essential to Christian life. Before receiving the Eucharist, we must be in a state of peace with our brothers and sisters.

“So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.” (Matthew 5:23-24)

By reintroducing the Kiss of Peace, we take Christ’s words to heart, renewing our commitment to love, forgiveness, and unity in faith. It is a simple yet powerful way to strengthen our sense of community and hospitality within our parishes.

How Can We Restore the Kiss of Peace?

During the Divine Liturgy, the Kiss of Peace can be shared in different ways, depending on what feels comfortable:

🤝 Traditional Gesture: A kiss on the right shoulder or cheek (moving to your left), followed by a kiss on the left shoulder or cheek (moving to the right).
🤝 Handshake: A simple handshake as a sign of peace.
🙏 Reverent Bow: For those who prefer not to make physical contact, a respectful bow toward those around you in the pews.

Regardless of how we express it, the most important aspect is the intention behind it: to acknowledge and embrace one another in Christian love and unity.
