From November 12th to 16th, a devoted group of women from the “Mothers Praying for the Children” prayer group at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Calgary set out on a pilgrimage to Mexico City, seeking spiritual renewal and a deeper connection through prayer at one of the most sacred sites in the Catholic world, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
A Journey of Faith and Intercession
The pilgrimage was marked by prayer, song, and heartfelt moments of unity. Together with clergy, the group had the extraordinary opportunity to celebrate Divine Liturgy in the chapel of St. Josef within the Basilica, offering prayers for all members of the Eparchy of Edmonton. The intentions carried to Our Lady included the needs of parish families, the protection and peace for children, especially those suffering amid war in Ukraine, and all the personal petitions entrusted by friends and loved ones.
“Our hearts were uplifted, and our faith strengthened by the grace we received. We are deeply grateful to God and to our Mother Mary for renewing us and for the blessing of praying together at the feet of Our Lady of Guadalupe,” shared one of the participants.
Our Lady of Guadalupe: Patroness of the Americas
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is a center of pilgrimage for millions each year, honouring the Virgin Mary’s miraculous apparitions to St. Juan Diego in December 1531. At the heart of the Basilica is the sacred image, imprinted miraculously on Juan Diego’s tilma (cloak), which continues to inspire faith, unity, and hope across the Americas and the world. Pilgrims who visit often seek consolation, healing, and powerful intercessions from the Mother of God, who revealed herself as the mother of all humanity and a source of light amid trials.
The Basilica complex offers worshippers historic chapels, vibrant plazas, and a spiritual haven where all ages feel welcomed. It was in this holy place, surrounded by both ancient tradition and living faith, that the women from Calgary found renewal and peace.
Praying for Peace and Healing
Throughout their pilgrimage, the group sang and prayed fervently for peace in Ukraine, for the well-being of children and families suffering from violence, and for all the intentions close to their hearts. The experience not only deepened their spiritual bonds but also strengthened their commitment to continue intercessory prayer within their parish and for the entire Eparchy.
A Blessing for the Eparchy
The pilgrims returned home with grateful hearts, bringing blessings and renewed faith to share with their community. Their journey stands as a witness to the power of prayer, the spiritual unity of the Church, and the enduring hope found in the maternal embrace of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
May the prayers offered at the Basilica echo throughout our Eparchy and bring comfort, protection, and peace to all those in need, especially the children and families of Ukraine.
