On November 7, 2025, community leaders and supporters gathered in Ottawa to mark the 20th anniversary of CNEWA Canada, the papal charity supporting vital humanitarian efforts worldwide. The Eparchy of Edmonton was represented especially by Bishop David Motiuk and parishioners Stan and Marge Owerko of Saint Stephen Protomartyr Parish, Calgary.

At the “Light in the East” Gala Dinner, Bishop David joined in honouring Stan and Marge Owerko, who received the CNEWA Faith & Culture Award. Their generous support has made a significant impact, especially through projects fostering education and hope for young people at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv and the Three Holy Hierarchs Seminary in Kyiv.

Bishop David remarked, “What an honour it is for our very own Stan and Marge, and the entire Eparchy of Edmonton, in acknowledging their generous philanthropic works, especially through their support in forming the young minds at the Ukrainian Catholic University, Lviv, and the Three Holy Hierarchs Seminary, Kyiv. May God reward them for their generosity and may they be an inspiration to all of us to do something, no matter how small, in support of those in need.”

CNEWA (Catholic Near East Welfare Association) was established by Pope Pius XI in 1926. It works through the Eastern Catholic Churches, providing humanitarian and pastoral support for people in the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India, and Eastern Europe, offering emergency relief, aid for the poor, and support for education and healthcare.

For many years, the Eparchy of Edmonton has partnered with CNEWA to bring help and hope to those most in need, especially in Ukraine. Together, they have coordinated fundraising and implemented support for families, children, and victims of war. The 20th anniversary Gala recognized the ongoing mission and celebrated the spirit of collaboration that brings light to countless communities.

Congratulations to Stan and Marge Owerko for their well-deserved recognition, and gratitude to all who continue to serve the mission of CNEWA and the Eparchy of Edmonton.
