Clergy Study Days 2025: Focusing on Catechesis, Synodality, and New Digital Learning Tools
From October 20-23, 2025, nearly 40 clergy members of the Eparchy of Edmonton gathered at Providence Renewal Centre for the Annual Clergy Study Days. This year’s theme, “Catechesis and Synodality,” provided the foundation for thoughtful discussion, hands-on learning, and dialogue on advancing faith formation in our parishes.
Guest speaker Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski (Eparchy of New Westminster), Chair of the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission, inspired attendees with his reflections on the lifelong journey of faith. “Catechesis and faith development don’t end when we receive our First Solemn Holy Communion; it is a continual process throughout one’s life,” he shared. Through his guidance, clergy explored renewed approaches to teaching and nurturing faith in their communities.
Another major focus was synodality, or “walking together” as the Church. Clergy were introduced to the newly revised Parish Pastoral Council Guidelines, practical tools to strengthen the relationship and collaboration between clergy and lay parish leaders. This new structure aims to foster vibrant, participatory parishes grounded in shared leadership and mutual support.
Unveiling “Image to Likeness”: A New Approach to Catechesis
A highlight of the study days was the introduction to “Image to Likeness,” a comprehensive catechetical program developed by the Eparchy under the leadership of Bishop David. This unique curriculum, rooted in Byzantine Rite and Eastern Catholic theology and tradition, is designed for students from Kindergarten through Grade 12, but also benefits adults seeking to deepen their faith. It covers essential themes such as Sacred Scripture, Liturgical Year, Feast Days, Prayers, and practical aspects for everyday living.
Developers of the “Image to Likeness” project presented the program’s main structure, outlining how it can be integrated into parishes, Sunday schools, and used by teachers for lesson planning. For the first time, the IT developer previewed the soon-to-be-launched web application learning platform. This digital platform features a friendly user interface and intuitive user experience, making both teaching and learning accessible and engaging for all ages.
While the full launch of “Image to Likeness” is scheduled for December 2026, the Eparchy is already educating clergy and parish leaders on its use and collecting feedback. The project remains in active development, with the promise of becoming an invaluable tool for faith formation and religious education across the Eparchy of Edmonton.
Participants left the Annual Clergy Study Days with renewed enthusiasm and practical tools to strengthen the spiritual life of their parishes. As the Eparchy continues to embrace innovation and collaboration, programs like “Image to Likeness” point the way toward a vibrant future of lifelong faith, leadership, and unity.
