Christmas is a time of deep joy and reflection—a sacred celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Across Alberta, the Ukrainian Catholic parishes invite everyone to embrace the true spirit of Christmas by coming together in faith, family, and love.
While the way we celebrate may vary, the essence of Christmas remains constant: honouring the miracle of the Nativity through prayer, community, and cherished traditions.

In Ukraine, celebrating Christmas on December 25th is not a modern invention but an ancient tradition deeply rooted in our Christian heritage. For centuries, the faithful followed the Julian Calendar, marking the Nativity of Christ on December 25th. With the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar in many parts of the world, the date shifted for some, but the essence of this celebration has always been about the profound spiritual significance of Christ’s birth.

Kolyadky (Christmas Carols)

Kolyadky are more than just songs—they’re proclamations of Christ’s birth. Children and adults alike gather to sing these joyful carols, sharing the message of salvation and bringing communities closer together.

Svyata Vecherya

The Twelve Dishes of Sviat Vechir

On Christmas Eve, families prepare a meatless supper of twelve dishes symbolizing the apostles. Each dish reflects humility and gratitude for the blessings of Christ’s coming.

An Extra Plate at the Table

A special place is set at the table for the souls of loved ones who are no longer with us, honouring their memory and reaffirming the hope of eternal life through Christ.

Vertep (Nativity Plays)

Vertep performances bring the Christmas story to life. These dramatic reenactments of the Nativity often include music, costumes, and even light-hearted moments to engage audiences of all ages.

Christmas is more than a date or tradition; it’s a call to come together in unity. It’s a time to deepen our connection with God, our families, and our communities. This year, as we celebrate the Nativity of Christ, let us renew our faith and embrace the joy and hope that His birth brings.
