The clergy of the Eparchy of Edmonton gathered for their annual retreat on June 5–9 in Caroline, Alberta. This year, Fr. Bo Nahachewsky was the retreat master and led the clergy in the writing of an icon of the Theotokos (Mother of God). Although this format of the retreat was not typical, each of the participants was able to create a traditional icon with Egg Tempra and 24-karat gold. The process took nearly 30 hours, during which they spoke at length about the language of iconography, the technical and spiritual process of creating the icons, the canons of iconography, including where each icon is properly placed in the liturgical space, and the prayers involved in the process.Â
