In Tone 3

10. Lead my soul forth from prison* that I may give thanks to Your name.

By Your cross, O Christ our Saviour,* the power of Death has been vanquished* and the deceit of the devil has been destroyed.* Therefore, mankind, saved by faith,* offers You hymns of praise forever.

9. The just shall gather around me* when You have been good to me.

O Lord, all creation has been enlightened by Your resurrection,* and paradise has been reopened;* therefore, all creation extols You* and offers You hymns of praise forever.

8. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

I glorify the power of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;* and I praise the dominion of the undivided Divinity,* the consubstantial Trinity,* who reigns forever and ever.

7. Let Your ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

We adore Your precious cross, O Christ,* and with hymns of praise we glorify Your resurrection;* for by Your wounds we have all been healed.

6. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

Let us sing the praises of the Saviour,* who was incarnate of the Virgin;* for He was crucified for our sake,* and on the third day He arose from the dead,* granting us His great mercy.

5. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

Christ descended into Hades and announced to those confined there:* Take courage, for today I have conquered death.* I am the Resurrection, the One who will set you free.* I shattered the gates of the realm of death.

4. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

O holy father John,* truly have you ever carried on your lips the praises of the Lord,* and with great wisdom have you studied the words of Holy Scripture,* that teach us how to practice the ascetic life.* So have you gained the riches of grace,* and you have become blessed,* overthrowing all the purposes of the ungodly.

3. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

O holy father John,* truly have you ever carried on your lips the praises of the Lord,* and with great wisdom have you studied the words of Holy Scripture,* that teach us how to practice the ascetic life.* So have you gained the riches of grace,* and you have become blessed,* overthrowing all the purposes of the ungodly.

2. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Most glorious father John,* with the fountain of your tears you have cleansed your soul,* and by keeping vigils through the night* you have gained God’s mercy.* You were raised on wings, O blessed one,* to the love of Him and of His beauty;* and as is right you dwell now in His unending joy,* with your fellow soldiers in the spiritual fight,* O holy saint of God.

1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

O holy father John,* through faith you have lifted up your mind on wings to God;* hating the restless confusion of this world,* you have taken up your Cross;* and, by following Him who sees all things* you have subjected your rebellious body to His guidance through ascetic discipline,* by the power of the Holy Spirit.

In Tone 5, Glory…
O holy father,* hearing the voice of the Gospel of the Lord,* you have forsaken the world, counting as naught its riches and its glory;* and so you have cried out to all:* “Love God,* and you shall find eternal grace.* Set nothing higher than His love,* that, when He comes in glory,* you may find rest with all the saints.”* At their prayers, O Christ, guard and save our souls.

In Tone 3, Now…
O Lady most honourable,* how could we but be rapt in wonder* at your giving birth to the Incarnate God* who, without a mother, was born of a Father before all ages?* You gave Him birth in the flesh without a father,* without a man’s instrumentality.* He is God and man whose two natures are intact,* neither one losing any of its properties.* Therefore, O Virgin Mother,* intercede with Him to save the souls* of those who believe and profess in true faith* that you are the Mother of God.

Aposticha, In Tone 3

O Christ, who darkened the sun by Your passion* and enlightened all creation by Your resurrection,* accept our evening prayer; for You love mankind.

The Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty. Robed is the Lord, and girt about with strength.

O Lord, Your life-giving resurrection has enlightened the entire universe* and has revived Your creation which lay in corruption.* Therefore, we, who have been released from the curse of Adam, cry out to You:* Almighty Lord, glory to You!

For He has made the world firm, which shall not be moved.

O God, although in Your divine nature You are unchangeable,* yet in Your human nature You underwent change by suffering in the flesh.* All creation was prostrate with fear* when it saw You hanging on the cross,* and it groaned in sorrow as it sang the praises of Your long-suffering.* But You descended into Hades and arose on the third day,* granting life and great mercy to the world.

Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, for length of days.

You suffered death, O Christ, to deliver mankind from death.* And when You arose from the dead on the third day,* You enlightened the world* and resurrected all who acknowledge You as God.

In Tone 2, Glory…
Let us honour John, angel upon earth and man of God in heaven,* adornment of the world, joy of the good and virtuous, glory of the ascetics.* For planted in the house of God he has blossomed with the flower of holiness,* and spread abroad like a cedar in the desert,* causing the sheep of Christ’s spiritual flock to increase* in sanctity and righteousness.

Now…
We now behold a new wonder,* greater than the wonders of old.* For who has ever known a mother to bear a child without the help of man?* Who has known a mother to hold in her arms the Source of all Creation?* It was God’s own will to be born in this manner;* and you, O most pure Virgin, carried Him as an infant in your arms.* Because of this, you can approach God with the boldness of a mother.* Therefore, we venerate you, and ask you to always beseech Him* to have mercy on us and save our souls.

We sing your praises, O Virgin;* for, as the Mother of God, you always intercede for the salvation of the human race.* It is from you that our God and Your Son took flesh. * Then, by suffering the passion on the Cross,* and out of love for mankind, He delivered us from corruption.

Troparion, Tone 1: O John, our God-bearing father,* you were shown to be a citizen of the desert,* an angel in bodily form,* and a worker of miracles.* Through fasting, prayers and vigils you received heavenly gifts* to heal the sick and the souls of those who, in faith, run to you.* Glory to Him who gives you strength.* Glory to Him who crowned you.* Glory to Him who works healing for all through you.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever. Amen.

Kontakion, Tone 4: On the heights of true abstinence,* the Lord established you as a reliable star,* giving light for guidance to the ends of the earth,* O father John, our teacher.

Epistle: Hebrews 6:13-20 (NRSV)
Brothers and Sisters, when God made a promise to Abraham, because he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, saying, “I will surely bless you and multiply you.” And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Human beings, of course, swear by someone greater than themselves, and an oath given as confirmation puts an end to all dispute. In the same way, when God desired to show even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it by an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God would prove false, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope set before us. We have this hope, a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus, a forerunner on our behalf, has entered, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Ephesians 5:9-19 (NRSV)
Brothers and Sisters, for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”  Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Gospel; Mark 9:17-31 (NRSV)
At that time a man came to Jesus, fell down before him and said, “Teacher, I brought you my son; he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak; and whenever it seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they could not do so.” He answered them, “You faithless generation, how much longer must I be among you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. It has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you are able to do anything, have pity on us and help us.” Jesus said to him, “If you are able!—All things can be done for the one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” When Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You spirit that keeps this boy from speaking and hearing, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again!” After crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he was able to stand. When he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “This kind can come out only through prayer and fasting..”

They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.”

Matthew 4:25-5:12 (NRSV)
At that time great crowds followed Jesus from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Hymn to the Mother of God
In you, O Full of Grace, all creation rejoices: the angelic ranks and all the human race. Sanctified temple and spiritual paradise, virgins’ pride and boast, from whom God is made flesh and became a little Child; and He who is our God before all ages, He made your womb a throne, and He made it wider that all the heavens. Стих: Мене обступлять праведники,* бо ти добро мені вчиниш.
Воскресінням твоїм, Господи,* все просвітилось, і рай знову відчинився,* а все творіння, вихваляючи тебе,* завжди пісню тобі приносить.

Отче Іоане преподобний, піднісшись розумом до Бога з вірою, зневажив ти нестійкість житейської суєти і, взявши хрест свій, за Всевидцем пішов, невгамоване тіло подвигами досконалости силою Божественного Духа розумові підкоривши.

Слава (г. 5): Преподобний отче, послухавши голос Євангелія Господнього, ти світ залишив, славу і багатство на ніщо обернувши. Відтоді ти всіх закликав: полюбіть Бога — і знайдете благодать вічну, нічого не ставте вище за любов до Нього і, коли прийде Він у славі Своїй, знайдете упокоєння з усіма святими; їхніми ж молитвами охорони, Христе, і спаси душі наші.

І нині (догмат, г. 3): Як нам не дивуватися, Всечесна, твоєму богочоловічому родженню?* Бо ти, Всенепорочна, не знавши мужа,* породила тілесно без батька сина,* зродженого в вічності від Отця без матері,* що не зазнав ніякої зміни чи змішання, чи розділу,* але в цілості зберіг прикмети обох природ.* Тому Мати-Діво, Владичице, моли його,* щоб спас душі тих, що православно визнають тебе, як Богородицю.

Слава (г. 2): Прославмо Іоана — ангела на землі і на небесах чоловіка Божого, величну окрасу світу, насолоду милостивих, чеснот постових похвалу. Покликаний до Церкви Божої, він процвів праведно і, наче кедр у пустелі, примножив стадо Христове словесних овець у побожності і правді.

I нині: О, нове чудо, над усі старовинні чуда!* Хто ж бо знав коли матір, що родила без мужа* і носила на руках того, хто держить усі створіння?* Бо народжене – це Боже уподобання,* що його ти, Пречиста, як дитину носила твоїми руками* і мала до нього матерню сміливість.* Тому не переставай молитись до нього за тих, що тебе почитають,* щоб змилувався і спас душі наші.

Тропар (глас 1): Пустинним жителем і в тілі ангелом,* і чудотворцем показав ти себе, богоносний отче наш Іване.* Постом, чуванням, молитвою небесні дарування прийнявши,* зціляєш недужих і душі, що з вірою прибігають до тебе.* Слава тому, що дав тобі кріпость,* слава тому, що вінчав тебе,* слава тому, що діє тобою всім зцілення.

Апостол: (Євр 6,13-20):
Браття і Сестри, коли Бог учиняв Авраамові обітницю, не маючи поклястися ніким вищим, то поклявся самим собою, кажучи: «Справді поблагословлю тебе щедро й розмножу тебе вельми.» І він, завдяки довгій терпеливості, осягнув обітницю: люди клянуться більшим від себе, і всякі їхні суперечки кінчаються клятвою на ствердження. Тому й Бог, бажаючи дати спадкоємцям обітниці якнайсильніший доказ, що його рішення непорушне, вжив клятви, щоб двома незмінними речами, в яких неможливо, щоб Бог казав неправду, ми мали сильну заохоту – ми, що прибігли прийняти надію, призначену нам. В ньому маємо, неначе якір душі, безпечний та міцний, що входить аж до середини за завісу, куди ввійшов за нас, як предтеча, Ісус, ставши архиєреєм повіки, на зразок Мелхиседека.

(Еф 5,9-19) (Преподобному):
Браття і Сестри, поводьтеся, як діти світла, бо плід світла знаходиться в кожній добрості, і праведності, і правді. Допевняйтеся, що приємне для Господа, і не беріть участи в неплідних ділах темряви, а краще й докоряйте. Бо соромно навіть казати про те, що роблять вони потаємно! Усе ж те, що світлом докоряється, стає явне, бо все, що явне стає, то світло. Через це то й говорить: Сплячий, вставай, і воскресни із мертвих, і Христос освітлить тебе! Отож, уважайте, щоб поводитися обережно, не як немудрі, але як мудрі, використовуючи час, дні бо лукаві! Через це не будьте нерозумні, але розумійте, що є воля осподня. І не впивайтесь вином, в якому розпуста, але краще наповнюйтесь Духом, розмовляючи поміж собою псалмами, і гімнами, і піснями духовними, співаючи й граючи в серці своєму для Господа,

Стих: На Тебе, Господи, уповав, щоб не осоромитись навіки (Пс 30,2).

Євангеліє: (Мр 9,17-31):
У той час один чоловік прийшов до Ісуса і, кланяючись, йому сказав: “Учителю, привів я до тебе сина мого, що має німого духа, і де тільки його вхопить, кидає його об землю так, що піниться, скрегоче зубами, дерев’яніє. Просив я учнів твоїх, щоб його вигнали, та не змогли.” Він же у відповідь каже їм: “О роде невірний! Доки я буду з вами? Доки вас терпітиму? Приведіть но його до мене.” І привели його до нього. Скоро дух угледів його, притьмом того затряс, і повалившись той на землю, запінившися, почав качатися. Спитав же його батька: “Скільки часу, як це йому сталося?” – “З дитинства”, – відповів той. “І часто він кидає його у вогонь і в воду, щоб його погубити. Та якщо можеш, поможи нам, змилосердившись над ним.” Ісус же каже йому: “Щодо того – якщо можеш – то все можливо тому, хто вірує.” І вмить батько хлопчини викрикнув крізь сльози: “Вірю, поможи моєму невірству!” Ісус же, бачивши, що збігається народ, погрозив нечистому духові, кажучи: “Німий та глухий душе! Наказую тобі: Вийди з нього й не входь більше в нього.” І, закричавши та сильно його стрясши, вийшов з нього. І наче змертвів той, тож многі казали: “Вмер він.” Але Ісус, узявши його за руку, підвів його, і той устав. Коли ж увійшов у дім, то учні його питали його насамоті: “Чому ми не могли його вигнати?” Він відповів їм: “Цей рід нічим не можна вигнати, тільки молитвою та постом.” Вийшовши звідти, проходили крізь Галилею, і він не хотів, щоб будь-хто знав. Навчав бо своїх учнів і казав їм: “Син Чоловічий буде виданий у руки людям, і вб’ють його, і, вбитий, по трьох днях, воскресне.”

Одного разу за Ісусом ішла велика сила людей з Галілеї, і з Десятимістя, і з Єрусалиму, і з Юдеї, і з Зайордання. І, побачивши натовп, Він вийшов на гору. А як сів, підійшли Його учні до Нього. І, відкривши уста Свої, Він навчати їх став, промовляючи:

Блаженні вбогі духом, бо їхнєє Царство Небесне.
Блаженні засмучені, бо вони будуть утішені.
Блаженні лагідні, бо землю вспадкують вони.
