Christ is Born! Glorify Him!
“God is love” (1 John 4:16)
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
As we celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord, we recall that the story of the birth of Jesus is a constant reminder of God’s love for us. The Christmas story is above all a love story.
Father Thomas FitzGerald, a spiritual writer, in his reflection upon the Nativity, focuses on this expression of Divine Love. He writes:
“The story of the birth of Christ is a vivid reminder of the depth of God’s love for us. God loves us so much that he has entered into life in this world in the person of Christ. The infinite God mysteriously accepted the limitations of our humanity.
“It was not enough for God to act through signs and wonders of the physical world. It was not enough for God to guide us through the prophets and teachers of old. No, this was not enough for God.
“To express his boundless love for us, the Living God appeared among us in the person of Christ Our Lord. By fully identifying himself with us, Christ has come to teach us, to heal us, and to lead us back to the Father.
“He has come to remind us that we are the Father’s precious daughters and sons.
“As St. John the Evangelist says: “God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son so that all who believe in him will not be lost but will have eternal life (John 3: 16).
“Many years before the Beatitudes were taught and many years before his Resurrection, Christ revealed God’s love for us through the simple events of his birth. The Lord of Glory demonstrated his love for us simply by entering into our life and by sharing in all that is truly human” (The Nativity: God Becomes Human to Show us the Way).
Saint John the Evangelist puts it this way:
“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another” (1 John 4: 7-11).
“We love because he first loved us. Those who say, ‘I love God,’ and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.” (1 John 4: 19-21).
Saint Teresa of Calcutta, adds: “It is impossible to love God without loving our neighbour.”
She says, “It is not enough for us to say: I love God, but I do not love my neighbour. St. John says you are a liar if you say you love God and you don’t love your neighbour. How can you love God whom you do not see, if you do not love your neighbour whom you see, whom you touch, with whom you live.
“Spread love everywhere you go; first of all in your house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbour. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.
“The biggest disease today is not leprosy or cancer or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling or being unwanted, uncared for, deserted by everybody. The greatest evil is the lack of love and charity, the terrible indifference towards one’s neighbor who lives at the roadside, the victim of exploitation, corruption, poverty, and disease.
Saint Teresa adds, “If everyone could see the image of God in his neighbor, do you think we should still need tanks and generals?”
Mother Teresa’s prayer, and my prayer for you “is that you may grow in the likeness of Christ, being real carriers of God’s love and that you really bring his presence, first, into your own family, then, to the next door neighbour, the street you we live in, the town we live in, the country we live, then only, in the whole world, that living example of God’s presence.”
Is this not what Christmas is really all about? The God of love expressed his boundless love for us. God chooses to appear among us in the person of his own son, Jesus Christ. God with us. Emmanuel.
And in this we rejoice!

«Бог є любов» (1 Івана 4:16)
Дорогі брати і сестри у Христі,
Святкуючи Празник Господнього Рождества, ми пригадуємо, що історія народження Ісуса є постійним нагадуванням про Божу любов до нас. Історія Різдва є понад усе історією любові.
Отець Томас Фітцджеральд, духовний письменник, у роздумах про Різдво, зосереджує свою увагу на вираженні Божественної Любові. Він пише:
«Історія народження Христа є яскравим нагадуванням про глибину Божої любові до нас. Бог настільки нас любить, що увійшов в життя цього світу в особі Христа. Неосяжний Бог в таємничий спосіб прийняв обмеженість нашої людськості.»
«Для Бога не було достатнім діяти через знаки і чуда у фізичному світі. Для Бога не було достатньо провадити нас через пророків і вчителів. Ні, для Бога цього не було достатньо.»
«Щоб виразити свою безмежну любов до нас, Живий Бог з’явився серед нас в особі Христа Господа. Повністю ідентифікувавши себе з нами, Христос прийшов нас вчити, зцілити нас і попровадити нас назад до Отця.»
«Він прийшов пригадати нам, що для Отця ми є дорогими доньками і синами.»
«Як говорить Євангелист Іван (Івана 3:16): Так бо Бог полюбив світ, що дав Сина свого єдинородного, щоб кожен, хто вірує в Нього, не згинув, але мав життя вічне. »
«За багато років до того як проголошував Блаженства та за багато років до свого воскресіння, Христос виявив Божу любов до нас лише через події свого народження. Господь Слави виявив свою любов до нас просто увійшовши в наше життя і цілковито прийнявши на себе людську природу» (Народження: Бог стає людиною, щоб вказати нам дорогу).
Святий Євангелист Іван висловлює це в наступний спосіб:
«Любі, любім один одного, бо любов від Бога, і кожен, хто любить, народився від Бога та знає Бога! Хто не любить, той не пізнав Бога, бо Бог є любов! Цим виявилась до нас любов Божа, що Бог послав у світ свого єдинородного Сина, щоб ми жили через Нього. А любов Божа полягає не в тому, що ми полюбили Бога, а що Він полюбив нас, і послав свого Сина на очищення за гріхи наші. Любі, коли Бог нас так полюбив, то й ми повинні один одного любити! (1 Івана 4:7)
«Ми любимо Його, бо Він перше нас полюбив. Як хто скаже: Я Бога люблю, та ненавидить брата свого, той неправдомовець. Бо хто не любить брата свого, якого бачить, той не може любити Бога, якого не бачить. І таку заповідь ми одержали від нього: Хто любить Бога, той нехай любить і брата свого» (1 Івана 4:19-21)
Свята Тереза з Калькути додає: «Неможливо любити Бога і не любити свого ближнього».
Вона каже «Для нас не достатньо казати: Я люблю Бога, але не люблю свого ближнього. Святий Іван каже, що ти обманюєш, коли кажеш, що любив Бога, але при цьому не любиш ближнього. Як ти можеш любити Бога, якого ти не бачиш, якшо ти не любиш ближнього, якого ти бачиш, доторкаєш і живеш з ним.»
«Поширюй любов всюди, де ти йдеш, перш за все в своєму домі. Люби своїх дітей, свою жінку чи свого чоловіка, свого сусіда. Нехай кожен, хто прийшов до тебе, відійде щасливішим і з піднесеним духом».
«Найгіршою хворобою сьогодення не є проказа, рак чи туберкульоз, але є почуття того, що ти нікому не потрібен, ніхто за тебе не турбується, що ти покинутий на призволяще. Найбільшим злом є відсутність любові і доброчинності, жахлива байдужість до ближніх в потребі, жертв знущання, корупції, бідності і хворіб.»
Свята Тереза додає «Якщо б кожен міг бачити образ Бога в своєму ближньому, чи потрібні би були нам танки і генерали?»
Молитва Матері Терези і моя молитва за вас «щоб ви зростали як подоба Господня, будьте справжніми носіями Божої любови, щоб ви приносили Божу присутність перш за все до ваших сімей, потім до сусідів, далі на вулиці, міста і країни, в яких ви живете, лише тоді світ буде сповнений присутністю Живого Бога.»
Хіба не це є основним посланням Різдва? Бог любові висловив свою безмежну любов до нас. Бог вибирає з’явитися посеред нас в особі власного сина, Ісуса Христа. Бог з нами. Еммануїл.
І в цьому ми возрадуємося!
Святкуючи Празник Господнього Рождества, нехай Христос поблагословить Вас і Вашу сім’ю миром, любов’ю і радістю, зараз і в новому році!
