The Resurrection and Return to the Father

Today, we celebrate the glorious feast of the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Today, we sing a hymn of victory, for in our Lord’s Passover from death to life, Christ our God has brought us from earth to heaven.

Truly, “this is the day that the Lord has made; let us exalt and rejoice in it!”

In the Book of Genesis, we read, “God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (1:27).

God’s plan for every human being was to live in harmony with God, and with each other. This is our vocation, to grow in our likeness to God.

Tragically, Adam and Eve, our first parents, chose to disobey God’s will, setting up their own will against God’s. They thought they could take the place of God. For this, they were expelled from the Garden of Eden.

Ever since, we have been seeking our return to the Father. It’s as if we have been standing at the gates of paradise, knocking, begging to be let back in.  But the gates of paradise could only be opened from within.  And they were, by our Saviour Jesus Christ, through his passion, death upon the cross, and his third-day resurrection.

Thomas Hopko, in his book “The Lenten Spring,” captures our longing to return home to the Father. He writes:

“From beginning to end, the lenten services of the Church call us to return to God our Father.

“The theme of the parable of the prodigal son runs through the entire season.  We have wasted what our good God has given us.  We have ruined our lives and our world.  We have polluted the air, the water and the earth.  The birds and the fish, the plants and the animals, grieve because of our wickedness.  We have corrupted our bodies and minds.  We have abandoned communion with God and the joy of his dwelling.  We have gone off on our own, following our own ideas, enacting our own plans.  And the result is that we are away from our true home, lost in a far country, living among swine.

“Through our reckless wasting of the gifts given by God we have stripped ourselves of our own original glory, wisdom, beauty and strength:  we have lost our divine legacy as children of God.”

However, as we read in John’s Gospel, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3: 16).

That which was lost, now is found.

God did not stop seeking after us, like the Loving Father sought after the prodigal son, until he was home, safe, with the Father.

Our “Return to the Father” is wonderfully captured in the liturgical services for the Sunday of the Prodigal Son:  “O faithful, let us discover the power of the divine mystery.  The prodigal came back from his sin and returned to his father’s house; in his loving kindness the father came out to meet him and kissed him.  He restored to him the glory of the house and prepared a mystical banquet on high.  He killed the fatted calf so that we may share in his joy:  the joy of the Father who offers with love, and the joy of the Lamb who gives himself for us; for he is Christ, the Saviour of our souls” (Vespers).

As we celebrate Easter and the resurrection of Our Lord, we rejoice. The gates of hades, and death, have been broken.

“O Lord, the gates of Death opened before you in fear, and the gatekeepers of Hades were filled with dread at the sight of you. You smashed the gates of brass and crushed the posts of iron.  Then you burst our chains asunder, and led us out from the darkness, away from the shadow of death” (At Psalm 140, Vespers, Resurrection Day; also Tone 2, Saturday Vespers).

And the gates of paradise have been reopened, along with God’s gift to us of eternal life.

“Today the sacred Pasch is revealed to us, holy and new Pasch, the mystical Passover, the venerable Passover, the Pasch which is Christ the Redeemer, spotless Pasch, great Pasch, the Pasch of the faithful, the Pasch which is the key to the gates of paradise, the Pasch which sanctifies all the faithful” (Paschal Stichera).

As a sign that Christ has opened to us the doors of paradise, the royal doors of the iconostas remain open during the entire Bright Week. In this we rejoice!

And now, the Father awaits us.  Let us go to him with open arms to receive his love.

On this holy day of the Resurrection of our Lord, I pray that God’s grace and love fills your heart, and that of your family and friends, and brings joy and peace to all people.

         Christ is Risen!

         Truly He is Risen!
