The Ukrainian Catholic bishops of Canada and the United States held their annual meeting in Kelowna, BC from May 1-3, 2018. Bishop Ken Nowakowski hosted the bishops at Seton House Retreat Centre overlooking picturesque Okanagan Lake.
Attending the meeting were Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak (Winnipeg), who chaired the meeting; Bishop David Motiuk (Edmonton); Bishop Bryan Bayda (Saskatoon); Bishop Ken Nowakowski (New Westminster); Bishop Archbishop-emeritus Stefan Soroka (Philadelphia); Bishop Andriy Rabiy (Philadelphia); Bishop Paul Chomnycky (Stamford); Bishop Benedict Aleksiychuk (St. Nicholas in Chicago); Bishop Bohdan Danylo (St. Josaphat in Parma).
The bishops commenced each day with a celebration of the Divine Liturgy in a small wooden chapel on the property, that afforded a breath-taking view of the lake below and the surrounding terrain.
The three day meeting addressed many topics of common concern for the faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in North America as well as topics in preparation for the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church to be held in Ukraine in September, among them: English translation of liturgical services, development of catechetical programs, vocations to the priestly and religious life and priestly on-going formation, cantors institutes, etc.
The bishops also had an opportunity to enjoy fellowship with the local Roman Catholic hierarchs: the newly-installed Bishop of the Diocese of Nelson, Most Rev. Greg Bittman, and the Bishop-emeritus, Most Rev. John Corriveau.
