The Resurrection and the Gift of Eternal Life

Today, we celebrate the glorious feast of the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Today, we sing a hymn of victory, for in our Lord’s Passover from death to life, Christ our God has brought us from earth to heaven.
Truly, “this is the day that the Lord has made; let us exalt and rejoice in it!”

In Todd Burpo’s bestseller, Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back, his young son Colton underwent emergency surgery at the age of three.

During the months after surgery, Colton began describing events and people that seemed impossible for him to have known about. Examples include knowledge of an unborn sister miscarried by his mother and details of a great-grandfather who had died 30 years before Colton was born.

“Colton also explained how he met Jesus riding a rainbow-colored horse and sat in Jesus’ lap while angels sang songs to him. He also saw Mary kneeling before the throne of God and at other times standing beside Jesus” (synopsis from Wikipedia).

Heaven is for real!

God’s plan for the world is Paradise – Heaven. God created the world, and everything in it, and saw that it was good. Creation is a sign and expression of God’s creative love.

When Adam and Eve were deceived by the serpent Satan, they were expelled from Paradise. As a result of the sin of our first parents, Paradise was lost to humankind. Yet, God did not give up on us. “The fall of Adam [and Eve] did not turn away the love of God for humanity (Ukrainian Catholic Catechism, no. 159).

Instead, God chose to send his own Son, Jesus Christ, to renew God’s divine plan for us:  “God so loved the world that God gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3: 16).

Through Jesus’ passion and death upon the cross, and his third-day Resurrection from the dead, that which was once lost to us has been restored:  Paradise. Heaven.

Christ himself descends into Hades and awakes Adam and Eve from the sleep of sin and leads them into Paradise (Catechism, no. 231).

If Paradise – Heaven is for real, how come I don’t always live accordingly?

For example, parents always want the best for their children by:  putting food on the table and a roof over their heads, making sacrifices, protecting them from danger, supporting their dreams, teaching them life skills, and so on. Indeed, these will serve our children well in this life. But what about preparing our children well for the next life, for eternal life with God?

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me…; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs” (Matthew 19: 14).

If we want the best for our children, that is, eternal life in God, let us put Christ first in our own lives, modelling what a Christian should look like. Let us share our faith with our children. Let us make family a priority, teach our children the Bible and about God. Let us regularly attend Church.  And let us encourage our children to have Godly influences in their lives, pray for them, and with them.

Do this and our children – and we – will have life, the fullness of life, as God intended in creation.

Heaven is for real!

On this holy day of the Resurrection of our Lord, I pray that God’s grace and love fills your heart, and that of your family and friends, and brings joy and peace to all people.
