Good Friday and “Crossovers”
The focus of Good Friday is the passion, death and burial of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The liturgical services of Good Friday, with their rich lessons from Sacred Scripture, help us to understand and celebrate the mystery of Christ’s passion and death.
Today, we commemorate: the spitting, the striking, the scourging, the cursing, the mockery; the crown of thorns, the purple cloak, the rod, the sponge, the vinegar and gall, the nails, the spear; and above all the cross and the death, which Christ voluntarily endured for us.
How do we make sense of it all? What does Good Friday mean for us today?
To borrow an image from today, in the automobile industry “crossovers” are vehicles built on a car platform combining features of a sport utility vehicle with those from a passenger vehicle, such as fold-down rear seats and extra cargo space.
In reality, Jesus invented the original crossover. His voluntary sacrifice on the cross allows us to crossover from sin and death to eternal life.
Good Friday simply put is a return to the Father.
The biblical story of the fall of Adam and Eve is a story of the loss of our original beauty and our exile from God. It is the story of our rebellion against the Creator and the transformation of the world as paradise with God into a place of hardship, struggle and self-centredness.
Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden as a result of their disobedience. Ever since, humanity sat outside the Gates of Paradise and was prevented from crossing over into full communion once again with God, that is, until the coming of Christ the Messiah.
Adam and Eve have placed themselves outside the Gates of Paradise.
The Lord took a handful of dust from the earth.
He breathed into it and created me, a living being.
He made me lord and master of all things on earth.
Truly I enjoyed the life of the angels.
But Satan the deceiver, in the guise of a serpent tempted me;
I ate the forbidden fruit and forfeited the glory of God.
Now I have been delivered to the earth through death.
O compassionate Lord, call me back to Eden!
Adam was exiled from paradise through disobedience.
He was driven from eternal bliss, deceived by the words of Eve.
He sat naked and weeping before the gates of paradise.
Let us hasten to re-enter the Gates of Paradise.
Let us carefully obey the Gospel commands,
That we may be made acceptable to Christ our God
And regain our home in Eden (Based on Vespers of Cheesefare Sunday).
The birth, death and resurrection of Jesus, the new Adam, opened up for once again the possibility for heaven and earth to be reunited. Jesus descended from heaven to earth so that we might ascend from earth into heaven. The crossover.
The sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross transcended the great abyss of sin and death and restored our original humanity and dignity.
O holy paradise, planted for me by God and lost by our weakness,
Grant that I may once again gaze on the flowers of your garden.
And the Saviour said, I do not wish the death of my creation.
I desire that all should be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.
For the one who comes to me I shall never cast out.
This Good Friday, let us continue to prepare ourselves through prayer, fasting and works of charity to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord and the original crossover which leads us from sin and death into eternal life.
Страсна П’ятниця та “Кросовер”
Страсна П’ятниця зосереджена довкола страждань, смерті та погребення Господа нашого Ісуса Христа.
Літургійні богослужіння Страсної П’ятниці є багатими на тексти Святого Письма, які допомагають нам зрозуміти і пережити таїнство Христових страждань і смерті.
Сьогодні ми пригадуємо терпіння, які Христос прийняв на себе добровільно заради нас: обпльовування, побиття, бичування, словесну наругу, висміювання, терновий вінок, багряницю, тростину, губку з оцтом і жовчю, цвяхи, спис; і насамперед хрест та смерть.
Як нам усвідомити основну суть цих подій? Що означає для нас Страсна П’ятниця?
Щоб краще збагнути суть цієї події, можна використати феномен з автоіндустрії – приклад автомобіля типу «кросовер». Кросовер побудований на платформі легкового автомобіля і він поєднує в собі одночасно властивості позашляховика і пасажирського автомобіля, включно з можливістю складання задніх сидінь та наявності додаткового багажного простору.
Саме Ісусу належить винахід першого «кросоверу». Його добровільне прийняття страждань на хресті дозволило здійснити найрадикальніший перехід від гріха і смерті до життя вічного – (в англійській мові ця дія переходу найкраще окреслюється словом “кросовер”). По простому можна сказати, що Страсна П’ятниця це повернення до Отця.
Біблійна історія гріхопадіння Адама та Єви, це історія втрати нашої первісної краси та наш відхід від Бога. Це історія повстання проти Творця і переміни райського світу з Богом на місце страждань, труднощів та егоцентризму.
Адам та Єва були вигнані з Райського Саду через їх непослух. З цього часу людство знаходилося на одвірках Раю і не могло знову перейти до повноцінного сопричастя з Богом аж до приходу Христа Месії.
Творець мій і Господь, узявши земний порох, оживив мене життєдайним подихом і вшанував як начальника всього видимого на землі, та співслужителя ангелів.
Але підступний сатана, послужившись змієм як орудником, обманув їжею, відлучив від Божої слави і віддав смерті в глибинах землі. Ти ж як Владика добросердний, знову призови мене.
Боготкану одежу скинули ми окаянні, за намовою ворога, переступивши, Господи, твоє божественне веління; у смоковне листя та в шкіряну одежу ми зодяглися;
Нас засуджено в поті гіркий хліб добувати, а землю проклято, щоб нам родила будяки і тернину. Але ти воплотившись останніми днями з Діви, призови нас і знову введи в рай.

Народження, смерть та воскресіння Ісуса – нового Адама, наново відкрило можливість для землі і неба об’єднатись. Ісус зійшов з небес на землю щоб ми могли піднестись на небеса – наймогутніший кросовер.
Жертва Ісуса на Хресті подолала велику прірву гріха і смерті та відновила нашу первісну людськість і гідність.
О святий раю, насаджений Богом і втрачений через нашу слабкість,
Дозволь мені ще раз споглянути на квіти у твоєму саді,
І Спаситель промовив, я не бажаю смерті своєму створінню,
Я хочу щоб усі спаслися і прийшли до пізнання правди.
Бо хто до мене приходить того я ніколи не відкину.
Цієї Страсної П’ятниці продовжуймо приготовляти себе через молитву, піст та діла милосердя щоб незабаром святкувати Воскресіння Нашого Господа і перший кросовер – перехід від гріха до життя вічного.
