Great news from Edmonton Catholic Schools!

On September 23rd, 2014 at a public Board meeting, the names of three new Catholic schools were approved unanimously by the Board of Trustees:

  • Father Michael Mireau Catholic Elementary/Junior High School (Summerside)
  • Bishop David Motiuk Catholic Elementary/Junior high School (Lewis Farms)
  • St. John XXIII Catholic Elementary/Junior High School (Windermere)

‘It has been a bittersweet day for us,” said Board Chair Cindy Olsen. “Our beloved Chaplain Father Mike passed away late last night and we are honouring him today,” added Olsen.

The new schools were announced by the Provincial Government during the fall of 2013 and the Board asked for the public to send in suggested names.

“Bishop Motiuk is with the Ukrainian Eparchy and is very special and loved in our District while St. John XXIII had a substantial impact on the 20th century,” Olsen said.  “All three men were selfless in their devotion to others,” and that is one of many reasons these names were chosen,” added Olsen.

The District’s replacement school at St. Brendan will remain named St. Brendan Catholic Elementary/Junior High School.  The replacement school is being built on the same site as St. Brendan Elementary, 5825 – 93 A Avenue, and closed at the end of June 2014.

Father Michael Mireau- “Father Mike is an inspirational figure in our Edmonton Catholic School District. Almost every child at ECSD has had a chance to hear this engaging, dynamic man speak. St. John XXIII Catholic Elementary/Junior High School (Windermere)

St. John XXIII-“Although few people had as great an impact on the 20th century as Pope John XXIII, he avoided the limelight as much as possible. Indeed, one writer has noted that his “ordinariness” seems one of his most remarkable qualities.   The firstborn son of a farming family,… Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was always proud of his down-to-earth roots… On his deathbed he said: “It is not that the gospel has changed; it is that we have begun to understand it better. Those who have lived as long as I have…were enabled to compare different cultures and traditions, and know that the moment has come to discern the signs of the times, to seize the opportunity and to look far ahead.”
