Twenty-seventh Sunday after Pentecost; The Holy Prophet Habakkuk (Avvakum); Passing into Eternal Life (1973) of Blessed Ivan Sleziuk Catacomb Bishop of Ivano-Frankivsk and Confessor – December 02.

Text from “The Divine Liturgy: An Anthology for Worship”; Pg. 333 (Tone 2)

Troparion (Tone 2): When You went down to death, O Life Immortal,* You struck Hades dead with the blazing light of Your divinity.*  When You raised the dead from the nether world,* all the powers of heaven cried out:*  “O Giver of Life, Christ our God, glory be to You!”

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

Kontakion (Tone 2): You rose from the tomb, O almighty Saviour,* and Hades, seeing this wonder, was stricken with fear; and the dead arose.*  Creation saw and rejoices with You, and Adam exults.** And the world, my Saviour, sings Your praises forever.

Now and for ever and ever. Amen.

Theotokion (Tone 2): The tomb and death could not hold the Mother of God,* unceasingly in her intercession and an unfailing hope of patronage,* for as the Mother of Life she was transferred to life* by Him Who had dwelt in her ever-virgin womb.

Prokimenon (Tone 2): The Lord is my strength and my song of praise,* and He has become my salvation. (Ps 117:14).

verse: The Lord has indeed chastised me, but He has not delivered me to death (Ps 117:18).

Epistle: (Ephesians 6:10-17): Brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Alleluia (Tone 2): Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
verse: The Lord will hear you in the day of tribulation; the name of the God of Jacob will shield you (Ps 19:2).
verse: Lord, grant victory to the king and hear us in the day that we shall call upon you (Ps 19:10).

Gospel: (Luke 13:10-17)At that time Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, ‘Woman, you are set free from your ailment.’ When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd, ‘There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.’ But the Lord answered him and said, ‘You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?’ When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.

Communion Verse: Praise the Lord from the heavens;* praise Him in the highest (Ps 148:1). Alleluia! (3x).
