GREAT VESPERS

Kathsima
“Blessed is the man…” is sung.

At Psalm 140

In Tone 8

  1. Lead my soul forth from prison* that I may give thanks to Your name.

O Christ, during this spiritual service,
we sing to You these evening prayers,
commemorating the mercy You have shown us
by Your resurrection.

  1. The just shall gather around me* when You have been good to me.

O Lord, O Lord, do not cast us away from Your face;
but in Your kindness have mercy on us
through Your resurrection.

  1. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

Rejoice, O holy Zion,
the Mother of Churches and the dwelling-place of God;
for you were the first to receive the forgiveness of sins
through the resurrection.

  1. Let Yours ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

Christ the Word was begotten by God the Father before all ages;
yet in these latter times,
He freely willed to take flesh from the Virgin who did not know man.
By His death on the cross and His resurrection,
He saved mankind from the ancient curse of death.

  1. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

O Christ, we glorify Your resurrection;
for by rising from the dead
You freed the race of Adam from the sufferings of Hades,
and as God You granted eternal life
and great mercy to the world.

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

Glory to You, O Christ our Saviour,
the only-begotten Son of God;
for You were nailed to the cross,
and then arose from the dead on the third day.

In Tone 6

  1. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

Through faithfulness the disciples of the Lord
became instruments of the Spirit
and were scattered to the ends of the earth
to proclaim His sacred word and the doctrine of truth.
From these roots, an army of Martyrs blossomed forth
by the grace of the Divine Gardener.
By their numberless torments and by fire,
they imitated the holy passion of Christ,
and now they intercede for our souls.

  1. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Inflamed by the love of the Lord,
the venerable Martyrs of Christ despised the fire;
and being consumed as living coals,
they burned the dried grass of the arrogance of error;
they bridled the mouths of the beasts by their prayers;
and by their beheading, they severed the hosts of the enemy.
Having courageously shed their blood,
they watered the Church with the seed of their faith.

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Truly the heroic Martyrs have wrestled with beasts
and were torn apart by their claws;
they fell under the edge of the sword
and were mutilated and tortured;
they were thrown into fire and burned alive,
dismembered and pierced with swords.
All this they bore courageously,
seeing in advance what was to come:
the unfading crowns and the glory of Christ.
And now they intercede for our souls.

  1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

Let us celebrate with songs of praise
the deeds of all the Saints over all the earth,
honouring them, as it is fitting:
the Apostles and Martyrs,
the Bishops and Holy Women.
While living on earth, they joined with the heavenly spirits,
and by the grace of Christ,
they received immortality through their sufferings.
They shine as bright stars for us,
and now they intercede for our souls.

Glory…

You are pillars of the Church
and the fulfilment of the Gospel,
O divine ranks of Martyrs.
By your deeds you have fulfilled the words of the Saviour;
for through you the gates of Hades,
once opened against the Church, have now been closed;
and through the shedding of your blood
you dried up the sacrifices poured out for the idols.
And having built up the faith of believers through your martyrdom,
you filled the heavenly spirits with admiration.
You stand before Christ, wearing your crowns;
intercede with Him for our souls.

In Tone 8, Now…

Out of his love for mankind
the King of heaven appeared on earth and dwelt with men,
for He assumed a human body from the pure Virgin
and was seen in the flesh He received from her.
He is the One and only God having two natures but not two persons.
Wherefore we profess and declare the truth
that Christ our God is perfect God and perfect Man.
O Mother, who knew not carnal union,
intercede with Him that He may have mercy on our souls.

Lytia (Optional)

In Tone 1

With unity of faith, let us celebrate a solemn feast
of all those who from the ages have found grace before God.
Let us remember all the Saints:
the Patriarchs, and Apostles of Christ, the Martyrs, and the Ascetics of all ages;
they intercede unceasingly for the peace of the world
and for the salvation of our souls.

Come, O faithful, let us celebrate, with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
the glorious memory of all the Saints:
the Baptist of the Lord, the Apostles and Prophets,
the Martyrs, the Bishops, and the Doctors of the Church,
the Blessed Ones, the Ascetics, and all the Just,
together with all the Holy Women.
Let us venerate their blessed memory,
and together, let us all sing:
O Christ our God and Supreme Goodness,
through their prayers grant peace to Your Church,
victory over the Enemy,
and salvation for our souls.

Come, let us celebrate the memory of the Saints, in the joy of the Holy Spirit;
for the day of their feast has arrived, filling us with divine gifts.
With purified conscience, let us cry out with joy
and let us sing in their honour:
Rejoice, O choir of Prophets who announce the coming of Christ,
and who clearly see that which is far away.
Rejoice, O Apostles of the Lord,
fishermen who gather the whole world in their nets.
Rejoice, O company of Martyrs,
gathered from all the world in the same profession of faith;
for this you suffered punishments and tortures
before receiving the crown of victory.
Rejoice, O multitude of Holy Fathers;
by your ascetic effort you subdued the body and put to death the passions of the flesh.
You have been carried in spirit, on the wings of divine love, to heaven
where you enjoy the eternal blessing with the angels whose joy you share.
Therefore, O Apostles, Prophets, and Martyrs, together with the Ascetics,
intercede with the One who crowned you in heaven,
and pray unceasingly to Him that He may deliver from the Enemy,
all those who, with faith and love, celebrate your holy memory.

In Tone 5, Glory…

O faithful, today let us hasten to the feast
for a spiritual banquet has been prepared;
the mystical cup has been filled with the food of joy.
It is the virtue of Martyrs from throughout the world
who offered themselves valiantly to God through the torments they suffered in their bodies;
and as a spiritual sacrifice,
they offered the flower of their youthful years:
their heads were cut off, their hands were severed,
their members were mutilated and wrenched apart.
And together, all these holy ones
shared in the sufferings of Christ.
But in exchange for their miseries,
You have given them crowns in heaven, O Lord;
and now in Your love for us,
grant that we may imitate their virtues.

Now…

O most pure Virgin, you are the temple, the gate, the palace
and the throne of the King.
Christ, our Redeemer and Lord,
appeared through you to those who slumbered in darkness.
For He, as the Sun of Righteousness,
wished to enlighten those whom He created with His own hands
according to His own image.
Therefore, O Lady, whom we always praise in song,
we beseech you to intercede with Christ
for the salvation of our souls;
for as His mother, you can approach Him with the greatest confidence.

Aposticha

In Tone 8

O Jesus, You descended from heaven
so that You might ascend the cross.
O immortal Life, You came to die.
You are the true light to those who live in darkness,
and You are the resurrection of the fallen.
Therefore, O Saviour of all, we glorify You.

The Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty.* Robed is the Lord, and girt about with strength.

Let us glorify Christ, the Saviour of our Souls
Who arose from the dead.
For He took upon himself a soul and a body,
and during His passion He separated the one from the other.
His pure soul went down to conquer Hades,
while His holy body lay uncorrupted in the grave.

For He has made the world firm.* which shall not be moved.

O Christ, we glorify Your resurrection with psalms and hymns.
For by Your victory over death
You delivered us from the sufferings of Hades,
and as God You granted us eternal life and great mercy.

Holiness befits Your house, O Lord,* for length of days.

O Lord of all, Creator of heaven and earth,
You are above all understanding.
Through Your passion on the cross
You freed us from the sufferings of Hades.
And, after condescending to be buried, You arose in glory;
and with Your mighty arm You also raised up Adam.
O most merciful Lord, we glorify You;
for by Your resurrection on the third day
You granted us remission of sins and eternal life.

In Tone 6, Glory…

Come, O faithful, let us exalt with joy:
let us celebrate in faith on this day
the feast of all the Saints;
and let us venerate their glorious memory, saying:
Rejoice, Apostles, Prophets, and Martyrs,
Bishops, O Just and Blessed Ones,
together with the ranks of the Holy Women.
Intercede with Christ for us,
that He may grant peace to the world
and great mercy to our souls.

Now…

Christ the Lord, our Creator and Redeemer,
came forth from your womb, O most pure Virgin.
He clothed Himself in our flesh
to set us free from the original curse of Adam.
Therefore, O Mary, we praise you, without ceasing,
as the true Virgin Mother of God,
and we sing with the angels:
Rejoice, O Lady, Advocate, Protector, and salvation of our souls.

Troparia (For Service Without Lytia)

In Tone 8
You came down from on high, O Merciful One,* and accepted three days of burial* to free us from our sufferings.* O Lord, our life and our resurrection,* glory be to You.

In Tone 4, Glory…
Your Church throughout the world, O Lord,* is clothed with the blood of Your Martyrs* as with fine linens and purple robes;* and so the Church cries out to You, O Christ our God:* Send down Your goodness upon Your people;* grant peace to Your Church and great mercy to our souls.

Now…
O Mother of God, the mystery hidden from all eternity* and unknown even to the angels,* was revealed through you to those on earth:* God took on our human nature* and united it to His divine nature in a perfect but unconfused union.* Then, He willingly accepted the Cross for our sake* and thereby raised again the first created man,* and saved our souls from death.

“Blessed is the man…” is sung.

At Psalm 140

In Tone 1

  1. Lead my soul forth from prison* that I may give thanks to Your name.

Accept our evening prayer, O holy Lord,* and grant us forgiveness of sins,* for You alone manifested the Resurrection to the world.

  1. The just shall gather around me* when You have been good to me.

O you people, walk around Zion and encompass her.* And there give glory to Him Who is risen from the dead.* For He is our God* Who delivers us from our sins.

  1. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

Come you people, praise and worship Christ.* Glorify His Resurrection from the dead;* for He is our God Who delivered the world* from the deceit of the enemy.

  1. Let Yours ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

Rejoice, O you heavens;* sound the trumpets, you foundations of the earth;* cry out with joy, O you mountains.* For behold, Emmanuel has nailed our sins to the Cross;* the Giver of Life has put Death to death;* and the Lover of Mankind* has raised up Adam.

  1. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

Let us praise the Lord* Who for our sake was willingly crucified in the flesh.* He suffered, was buried, and rose from the dead.* Therefore, let us sing to Him:* O Christ, keep Your Church in the orthodox faith* and bring peace to our lives;* for You are gracious and love mankind.

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

O Christ our God, as we stand unworthily before Your life-bearing grave,* we offer a hymn of praise to Your ineffable tenderness of heart.* For You, O Sinless One,* in Your loving-kindness have accepted the Cross and death* in order to grant* resurrection to the world.

  1. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

Let us praise the Word* Who is without beginning and co-eternal with the Father.* For our sake He was born of the Virgin;* He freely accepted the Cross and death, and rose in glory.* Therefore, let sing to Him:* Glory to You, O Lord,* the Giver of Life and Saviour of souls.

In Tone 4

  1. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

You were brought forth, long-suffering Agrippina,* as a fragrant rose from the meadow of Rome,* perfuming the thoughts of the faithful with the sweet scent of virtue,* dispelling the foul odour of the passions by grace.* You are the firm support of the Church,* the adornment of martyrs, the boast of virgins,* an ocean of miracles, all-honourable one!

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

After your contest in Rome,* Christ God gave your relics to Sicily as a precious treasure.* You came there, martyr, famous in hymns,* expelling the vile throng of devils by your authority!* Therefore we bless you and celebrate your struggle today,* long-suffering Agrippina!

  1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

At the command of Him Who bears the universe,* all-praiseworthy Agrippina,* your friends Vassa and Paula bore your body on their shoulders.* As they passed from place to place,* you laboured by divine grace to perform a sea of far-reaching miracles,* while resting where God provides refreshment for those whose toils are ended!

In Tone 1, Glory… Now…

Let us sing a hymn of praise to the Virgin Mary,* glory of the whole world!* She was herself formed by human seed,* yet she became the Mother of the Master, the Gate of heaven,* the theme of the angels’ hymn and beauty of the faithful.* She was seen as being heavenly* and the Tabernacle of the Godhead.* She indeed tore down the wall of enmity between God and man,* and brought peace in its place, she opened up the kingdom of heaven.* Let us therefore cling fast to her for she is the anchor of faith,* and let us receive as our stronghold the Lord Who was born of her.* Be of good cheer, then, and have confidence, O people of God,* for He will fight our enemies for us, He is all-powerful!

Aposticha

In Tone 1

O Christ, by Your Passion we have been freed from suffering;* and by Your Resurrection we have been delivered from corruption.* O Lord, glory to You!

The Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty. Robed is the Lord, and girt about with strength.

Let all creation rejoice, let the heavens be glad,* let the nations clap their hands with joy.* For Christ our Saviour, in His love for mankind,* has nailed our sins to the Cross;* He has put Death to death,* and by raising our fallen forefather, Adam,* He has given life to all mankind.

For He has made the world firm, which shall not be moved.

O God, You are above all understanding;* You are King and Lord of heaven and earth.* Yet of Your own free will,* You allowed Yourself to be crucified because of Your love for mankind.* When You descended below,* Hades was filled with bitterness as You confronted it;* but the souls of the just received You with great joy.* Adam arose when he saw You, his Creator, down in the depths.* What a wonder this is!* You are the life of all and have tasted death* in order to dispel the darkness of the world with Your light.* O Lord, risen from the dead, glory to You!

Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, for length of days.

The myrrh-bearing women were filled with grief* as they hastened with spices to Your tomb;* but they did not find Your most pure body.* Instead, they found an angel* who proclaimed Your unique and glorious Resurrection,* and commanded them to announce to Your Apostles:* The Lord is risen, granting great mercy to the world.

Glory… Now…

O Mother of God, the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled,* since you remained a virgin both before and after giving birth.* For it was God Who was born of you to restore our human nature.* Therefore, do not overlook your servants who supplicate you in your temple.* Since you have held the merciful Lord in your arms,* be compassionate toward your servants,* and beseech Him to save our souls.

Troparia

In Tone 1
Though the stone was sealed by the Judeans* and soldiers guarded Your most pure body,* You arose, O Saviour, on the third day* and gave life to the world.* And so the heavenly powers cried out You, O Giver of Life:* Glory to Your Resurrection, O Christ!* Glory to Your Kingdom!* Glory to Your saving plan!** O only Lover of Mankind.

In Tone 4, Glory…
Your lamb, Agrippina, O Jesus, cries in a loud voice:* “You, O my Bridegroom, I love; and, seeking You, I undergo martyrdom.* And with You I am crucified and buried in Your baptism,* and I suffer for Your sake that I may reign with You.* And I die on Your behalf that I may live in You.* Receive me as a spotless sacrifice,* sacrificed for You with love.”* Through her intercession in Your mercy save our souls.

Now…

“Blessed is the man” is sung.

At Psalm 140

In Tone 6

  1. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

Placing all your hope upon God,
you accepted the covenant of the Heavenly Teacher,
Who said: “Let not your hearts be troubled!”
Thus, having lived in the faith joyfully,
and strengthening your souls through daily ministry,
you accepted the ascetic labours of martyrdom and confessing faith in Christ,
passing through much suffering and many torments.
And, as heavenly citizens from the lands of Ukraine,
you now shine forth from the many rooms of the Father’s house,
receiving the gift of efficacious boldness
to pray for our souls.

  1. Let Yours ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

Placing all your hope upon God,

  1. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

The Creator made everything for the sake of joy and love.
All creation was brought about not for death, but for His own glory.
But, for the sake of delivering all,
He endured the sufferings of the Cross,
instead of the joy that was rightfully His.
Likewise You, O Blessed Ones, imitating your Teacher,
having come to know the joy of faith,
– you also experienced suffering,
you came to know the Father – seeing the Face of the Sufferer,
Who, Himself passed through the way of sorrows,
and prepared for you a place
in the House of the Father.

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

  1. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

Because of your unwavering faith,
all were in awe of you, O holy ones:
as the fierce persecutor was bringing the visible Church down to ruin,
you were built up in strength on account of your faithfulness to the Invisible One;
around you was the destruction of life and human dignity
and yet, it was humility and Life Indestructible, Whom you made manifest to the world;
in the face of an endless cycle of death and hatred,
you preached the Truth, even to those who persecuted you;
and, prayed for those who tormented you,
as did the One, Who strengthened you in the midst of your torments
and gave you the grace to intercede
for our souls.

  1. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Although the image of the visible Church was destroyed,
and though many souls were terrified by the enemy
– yet you did not give in to despair
nor did you abandon your ministry,
which our Lord willed for His friends;
since, you believed, that in the image of His death and resurrection
after the time of night – there would radiate the dawn of regeneration
and a time of reconstruction would commence,
when others would inherit the fruit of your sufferings and torments.
For, you longed to fulfil the commands of the Master
and testified that the impossible can be achieved,
by those who are filled with the love of God.

  1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

Although the image of the visible Church was destroyed,
and though many souls were terrified by the enemy

For, you longed to fulfil the commands of the Master
and testified that the impossible can be achieved,
by those who are filled with the love of God.

In Tone 6, Glory…

The fierce and inhuman enemy
cunningly devised to destroy the Church which was not under his authority through a false reunion
with the Church which he had already profaned and enslaved.
And so with honours, benefits and temporal abundance
did he entice arch-pastors, priests and the faithful,
threatening with dire penalties and even death, those who would refuse him.
But the hierarchs proved their steadfastness
and spoke thus to their tormenters:
“We glorify God in truth and it is in righteousness that we teach the word of His truth.
We will not betray the Church by worshiping tyranny,
nor will we renounce our Chief-Apostolic Unity:
we suffer for it
and in so doing, we remain faithful!”

Now…

Who would not call you blessed, O Virgin most-Holy?* Who would not sing a hymn of praise to the glory of your giving birth without pain or travail? The Only-begotten Son Himself, begotten of the Father before all ages, was made flesh out of you in a manner that cannot be explained, O Woman most-Pure! And for our sake He Who Is God by nature assumed the nature of man. He is not divided into two persons; He is understood to have two natures without commixion or confusion. O noble and blessed woman, intercede with Him that He may have mercy on our souls.

Lytia

In Tone 1

“I will not leave you orphans”, said the Lord to his friends before His Passion.
Upon you was this word fulfilled,
O all-blessed martyrs of the land of Rus’-Ukraine!
Having known the sweetness of the Church
you experienced the bitterness of persecution;
having lived in the beauty and splendor of worshiping in a temple
you became naked, orphaned, and bereft of glory.
But the Lord did not leave you, O wise martyrs;
for, the Man of Sorrows, who endured abuse, bequeathed the saying: «I will come to you»,*
and you saw the One, Whom the world was unable to see.

You reached the heights of ecclesiastical and public life, O hierarchs,
and in but one moment you fell into the darkness of imprisonment.
Yesterday, you were surrounded by numerous clergy and a great gathering of people
today you are in the company of despairing and frightened prisoners.
Once, you were clothed in vestments of grace
today, stripped of all rights, you wear the garments of poverty.
But your light did not set in the darkness;
for, it is in your humiliation that the priceless worth of the treasure of Christ’s virtues was revealed.
At no time did you abandon your ministry:
neither in your becoming great, nor in your self-emptying.
O faithful and unbroken pastors,
pray for our souls.

In Tone 2

As the Lord is living,
so are you alive in His tents above the heavens,
in ineffable closeness to Him,
in the joy of contemplating His Face.
As you did not spare your earthly and temporal lives,
so now you reside in the fullness of life,
and pray that your co-citizens on earth may inherit the Light of Heaven.

In Tone 4

O Confessors of Faith in Christ, you did not abandon your ministry!
You neglected neither love for one’s neighbor nor the Church’s Rule of Prayer:
underground and in the forests, in faraway houses and in small city rooms
the Sacrifice of the Eucharist was offered by you.
О great wonder!  In taking away the church buildings the enemy did not destroy the Church;
although some were slain – others were revealed as Confessors of Faith.
For the Church is alive not in church buildings alone,
since the Spirit and Truth build everywhere a temple for themselves!
Behold how the inconspicuous home of a fireman or laborer
becomes an effulgent and magnificent temple and Heaven on earth;
the man, unsightly and worn out
the priest, worthy and majestic!
The gates of Hades cannot overcome the Church
the harvest of her passion brings but greater fruit.

In Tone 5, Glory…

They did sing, to the God in the highest,
did the blessed martyrs sing!
And in prisons, dungeons and while in exile
they glorified His Name.
Becoming perfected in lives cut short,
they fulfilled longevity,
since they endured in the truth, even in the midst of evil.
And now by their prayers these holy ones obtain
for their countrymen, grace and mercy, and the care of God.

Now…

Let us sing!
To the Mother of our God, let us sing, O faithful,
and let us glorify with the liturgy of routine daily living
that Life, Whom she bore for us!
Let us nurture, as did she, the perfection of a simple heart,
that we may fulfill the first and most important commandment:
that we love God and our neighbor without guile.
Through the prayers of the Theotokos upon the children of her Son
there descends grace and mercy and the care of God.

Aposticha

In Tone 2

The Son of God, together with His Father, came and made His dwelling,
in you, who were cast out into exile,
bereft of dwellings, and thrown into prisons.
The tormenter imprisoned the shepherds, devising thereby to scatter the fold,
but the incarcerated fearlessly called out:
“You will not pull the root of the Church from our lands,
for her root is in the Heavens!”

The just cried out and the Lord heard them,* and delivered them out of all their afflictions. (Ps. 33[34]:18)

Living in the temporal, by the power of the One-Beyond-Time
and in the ordinary, by the feast of ceaseless Praise of God,
you were not afraid, when you lost everything,
and you were not tempted by the apparently good things with which the tyrant enticed you,
and thus you were able to cry out to the crucifiers:
“You will not pull the root of the Church from our lands,
for her root is in the Heavens!”

The afflictions of the just are many,* and out of them all will the Lord deliver them. (Ps. 33 [34]:20)

You lived in the peace of the Lord,
the peace, which He left for His disciples,
and so you did not receive a false peace from the world:
you did not agree to enslave the Church.
That is why your crucifiers cried out in horror:
“We will not pull the root of the Church from this land,
for her hierarchs are rooted in the Heavens!”

In Tone 4, Glory…

In recent times, the land of Rus’-Ukraine produced a multitude of martyrs
and many of their names are known to us,
and many – only to God;
we glorify all of them, known and unknown,
even when we commemorate but a small number of their community:
hierarchs, priest-martyrs, the venerable and righteous,
who did not squelch the Spirit and were well-pleasing to the Master.

Now…

A multitude of petitions do we send up before the Theotokos,
and many the human sorrows of which the Virgin is aware.
But let us look closely at her icon, known and unknown:
for, we are called to become partakers of divine nature
and together with all the saints we are to make God manifest to the entire world,
even as did she, providing a dwelling in her womb for the One, Whom nothing can contain.

In Tone 4, Glory…

Christ asked three times: Peter, do you love Me?
Thereby He satisfied the three-fold denial;
and Simon, understanding the mystery, cried to the Lord:
You know all things; You know that I love You.
After this, Christ said to him:
Feed my sheep, feed my lambs;
feed those sheep which I have fashioned for salvation with my own blood.
Therefore, O blessed Apostle of God,
beseech Him to grant us great mercy.

Now…

O Mother of God, David the prophet and forefather of Christ foretold in song
the great things that would happen to you.
He revealed that you would be a queen,
standing at the right hand of God,
and that you would be the Mother of Life and Intercessor for the world.
He prophesied that God, in his good will toward mankind,
would become incarnate of you without a human father.
Thus He would restore His image within us,
which had become disfigured by our passions.
He would seek out the lost sheep that was trapped in the hills;
He would lift it upon His shoulder and carry it to His Father
who would place it in the midst of His heavenly hosts.
In like manner, Christ will save the world because of His great and abundant mercy.

Lytia

In Tone 2

Come today, O assemblies of the faithful,
O choirs full of praise, O beautiful gathering,
O chosen craftsmen of grace,
we are crowning Peter and Paul with worthy praises.
They sowed the Word in its fullness;
through them the grace of the Spirit was poured out abundantly.
And being the vine of the true vineyard,
they divided up for us a ripe cluster, making our hearts joyful.
Let us sing to them with clear expression,
and with a clean conscience let us say:
Rejoice, O destroyers of the unwise
and the servants of the spiritual ones.
Rejoice, O intermediaries for the good who banish evil.
Let us beseech them to always pray to the Creator and Teacher
to grant an enduring peace to the world
and great mercy to our souls.

Let us praise as intercessors for the world,
the teachers and foundations of the Church of Christ,
its true pillars and walls,
trumpets of the divine teachings and sufferings of Christ,
the prime apostles Peter and Paul.
They travelled throughout the earth,
as though with a plough, sowing the faith,
and planted a knowledge of God in all,
revealing the Word of the Trinity.
O Peter, rock of foundation, and Paul, O chosen vessel,
you were harnessed together to the will of Christ.
You raised up all creation to a knowledge of God:
the nations, the cities, and the islands.
Indeed, you lifted up anew the Hebrews into the Church,
and now you pray that our souls be saved.

O Peter, the first of the glorious apostles and rock of faith!
wondrous Paul, orator and lamp stand of the holy churches,
standing before the divine throne,
pray to Christ for us.

O Paul, spokesman of the Lord and foundation of doctrine!
Once you were a persecutor of Jesus the Saviour,
and then indeed you were among the first of the apostles, O blessed one.
You saw the ineffable One, O wise Apostle.
You were transported up to the third heaven, and you exclaimed:
Come with me and do not be deprived of the good things.

In Tone 3

O citizens of the heavenly Jerusalem,
behold the rock of faith and the orator of the Church of Christ,
the two men of the Trinity and fishers of the world,
today are departing from the earth.
Suffering the passion, they ascend to God,
and they pray to Him with confidence to save our souls.

In Tone 5, Glory…

The wisdom of God and the Word who is co-eternal with the Father
has truly foretold in the Gospel, O all-praiseworthy Apostles,
that you are the two most fruitful vines;
for you bore in your branches the ripe and beautiful cluster
from which we believers are now nourished
and whose taste brings us both sweetness and delight.
Therefore, O Peter, rock of faith, and Paul, pride of the universe,
strengthen the flock that became yours through your teachings.

Now…

We bless you, O Theotokos and Virgin;
and we faithful ones glorify you always.
You are the ineffable city, the mighty wall,
the powerful mediatrix, and the haven of our souls.

Aposticha

In Tone 1

O glorious apostle Paul,
who can describe your bondage and sorrow in the cities,
your tribulations and hardships,
your vigils and sufferings?
You have suffered hunger, thirst, and cold,
nakedness and scourging with rods,
the crossing of wilderness, shipwreck and stonings.
You have both angelic and human character,
bearing all with the help of Christ who strengthened you,
so that you might gain the world for Christ, your Lord.
We, who celebrate your memory in faith,
beseech you to intercede for the salvation of our souls.

Through all the world their voice resounds; their message reaches to the ends of the earth.

O glorious apostle Paul,
who can describe your bondage and tribulations in the cities?
Who can tell the hardships and struggles you went through in the preaching of Christ
that you might win all people and present the Church to Christ?
O apostle Paul, teacher of the Churches,
pray that the Church may be strengthened by your teachings
until the end of time.

The heavens proclaim the glory of God, and the firmament shows forth the work of his hands.

Let us extol Peter and Paul,
the two great luminaries of the Church;
for they have shone forth with the firmness of faith,
transcending the sun in brilliance.
By the rays of their preaching
they led the Gentiles from ignorance to divine knowledge.
Therefore, one of them was nailed upon the cross,
thus making his way into heaven
where he received the Kingdom from Christ himself.
The other was beheaded with the sword and carried to the Saviour,
where he received the blessing that he deserved.
Both declared that the unjust ones laid hands against the Lord.
By their powers, therefore, O Christ our God,
take your anger away from us and make firm our faith,
for You are the Lover of Mankind.

In Tone 6, Glory…

Today a delightful feast has shone forth to the ends of the earth,
the all-solemn memorial of the most wise and first apostles, Peter and Paul.
Therefore, let Rome receive the glad tidings, rejoicing;
and let us feast on this solemn day, crying out to them:
Rejoice, O Peter, apostle and special friend of the Teacher, Christ our God.
Rejoice, O truly beloved Paul,
preacher of the faith and teacher of the universe.
Because of your privilege, O holy ones,
beseech Christ our God to save our souls.

Now…

Christ the Lord, our Creator and Redeemer,
came forth from your womb, O most pure Virgin.
He clothed himself in our human flesh
to set us free from the original curse of Adam.
Therefore, O Mary, we praise you, without ceasing,
as the true Virgin Mother of God,
and we sing with the angels:
Rejoice, O Lady, advocate, protector, and salvation of our souls.

July 07; Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, Sunday of All Saints of Rus'-Ukraine, Tone 3; Our Venerable Father Thomas of Maleum; and Acacius mentioned in The Ladder of Divine Ascent of Saint John Climacus

GREAT VESPERS

Kathisma Reading
“Blessed is the man…” is sung.

At Psalm 140

In Tone 2

  1. Lead my soul forth from prison* that I may give thanks to Your name.

Come, let us adore God the Word,* Who was born of the Father before all ages,* and was incarnate of the Virgin Mary;* for of His own free will He suffered the Cross* and submitted Himself to burial,* and arose from the dead to save me, a sinful one.

  1. The just shall gather around me* when You have been good to me.

Christ our Saviour cancelled the decree that was written against us,* by nailing it to the Cross;* and He abolished the dominion of Death.* Let us glorify His Resurrection on the third day.

  1. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

Let us, together with the archangels, sing of Christ’s resurrection;* for He is the Redeemer and Saviour of our souls.* He will come again in awesome glory and mighty power* to judge the world which He has fashioned.

  1. Let Yours ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

Although You died and were buried,* the angel yet declared You as Master.* He said to the women: Come and see where the Lord was placed;* for He is risen as He foretold,* because He is almighty.* Therefore, we worship You, the only Immortal One,* and we beseech You to have mercy on us, O Giver of Life.

In Tone 4, for Sts.Peter and Paul

  1. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

You have given as the pride and glory of Your Church, Lover of mankind,* the holy apostles Peter and Paul.* They shine upon the world as spiritual stars;* through them You have enlightened our darkness,* almighty Jesus, the Saviour of our souls!

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

You have given two mighty pillars to Your Church, Lord:* Peter the rock and Paul the wise.* They proclaim the truth and chase away the errors of godlessness.* Their words reveal Your glory to us,* almighty Jesus, the Saviour of our souls!

  1. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

You have given two models of conversion to the faithful, Lord:* your blessed apostles Peter and Paul.* One repented, after denying you at the time of Your Passion;* the other believed, after opposing Your preaching:* now they both stand among the first of Your friends,* almighty Jesus, the Saviour of our souls!

In Tone 4, for the Twelve Apostles

  1. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Let us bless the honourable disciples!* They were the eye-witnesses of the Incarnate Word.* They shine upon the world like flashes of lightning;* as spiritual giants they bring sweetness to our souls.* They are rivers of paradise,* flowing with living water for the refreshment of the churches!

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Let us honour Christ’s fellow-labourers!* They are lightning bolts hurled to earth by the might of the Spirit;* workers of miracles and witnesses of the mysteries,* tablets of divine love written by the hand of God,* honourable masters of the divine law!

  1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

The foolishness of the philosophers is corrected by the rod of the fishermen!* The vanity of the orators is put to confusion by divine wisdom!* The apostles proclaimed the infinite goodness of the Gospel;* now they exult in the communion of eternal blessedness:* the joy of the angels and the unfading crown of glory.

In Tone 6, Glory…

Assemble, chosen members of Christ’s holy Church!* The feast of the honourable apostles dawns upon the earth,* bringing salvation for us all!* Clap your hands, all peoples; cry out in exultation:* rejoice, twin rays of the sun, enlightening us who sit in darkness!* Rejoice, Peter and Paul, unshakeable pillars of divine doctrine!* Rejoice, friends of Christ and chosen vessels!* Come, and be present with us in spirit:* grant us spiritual gifts as we celebrate your sacred memory in song!

In Tone 2, Now…

O Virgin, the shadow of the Law passed away* with the realization of grace.* For as the bush had burned without being consumed,* so you gave birth while a virgin* and you remained a virgin.* Instead of the pillar of fire there rose the Sun of Justice.* Instead of Moses, Christ God came forth,* the Saviour of our souls.

Aposticha

In Tone 2

Your Resurrection, O Christ our Saviour,* has enlightened the whole universe;* and, through it, You call back to Yourself all Creation.* Almighty God, glory to You!

The Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty. Robed is the Lord, and girt about with strength.

By the wood of Your Cross, O Saviour,* You have abolished the curse of the tree;* by Your burial You have destroyed the power of death;* and by Your Resurrection You enlightened the human race.* We, therefore, cry out to You:* O Christ our God, Giver of Life, glory to You!

For He has made the world firm, which shall not be moved.

O Christ, when You were nailed to the Cross,* the distorted nature of creation was made manifest.* The soldiers showed their inhumanity by piercing Your side with a lance,* and the people showed their ignorance of Your power* by asking that Your tomb be sealed.* But, in Your mercy, You accepted burial* and then arose on the third day.* O Lord, glory to You!

Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, for length of days.

O Christ, Giver of Life,* You freely endured the Passion for the sake of mortals.* In Your power You descended into Hades;* and snatching, as from a mighty monster, the souls of those who awaited Your coming,* You placed them in Paradise.* Therefore, show Your great mercy to us who glorify Your Resurrection,* and cleanse our souls.

In Tone 6, Glory…

A joyful feast dawns upon the earth today:* the memorial of Peter and Paul, the wise leaders of the apostles.* Let Rome rejoice and be glad with us!* Let us keep feast, brethren, in songs and hymns.* Rejoice, apostle Peter, true friend of Christ our God!* Rejoice, beloved Paul, herald of the faith and teacher of the universe!* You have boldness before Him, chosen pair:* pray unceasingly that our souls may be saved!

Now…

Theotokos, you are the true vine who blossomed for us the fruit of life:* implore Him, we pray you, Lady, together with the apostles and all the saints,* that He will have mercy on our souls!

Troparia

In Tone 2
When You went down to death, O Life Immortal,* You struck Hades dead with the blazing light of Your divinity.* When You raised the dead from the nether world,* all the powers of heaven cried out:* “O Giver of Life, Christ our God, glory be to You!”

In Tone 8, Glory…
O saints, your message has spread throughout the world,* for receiving the Spirit in tongues of fire you torched the idols’ deceit.* With the net of your words you caught those who were lost and brought them to faith.* Therefore the heavens declare your glory* and the firmament which God created adds its voice* and we with them cry out feasting your memory:* Save us all, O God, by the prayers of your twelve apostles.

In Tone 4, Now…
You are chief apostles and teachers of the world. * Beseech the Lord of all * to grant peace to the world * and abundant mercy to our souls.

Listen, O daughter, give ear to my words.

Your honoured feast, pure and holy Virgin,* is glorified by angels in heaven and by mankind on earth;* for you are the Mother of Christ our God, the Creator of all.* Do not cease to entreat Him for us, we beg you;* for next to God, we have placed our trust in you,* O Theotokos, most highly praised and pure of all stain.

In Tone 2, Glory… Now…

Today the church of God adorns itself, all-pure Theotokos,* putting on your precious robe as a most splendid crown.* It rejoices and dances in spirit,* crying out to you, Mistress:* Rejoice, precious diadem and crown of divine glory!* Rejoice, only perfection of glory and eternal gladness!* Rejoice, haven and deliverance of those who run to you* and our salvation!

Glory… Now…
O gracious Lord, for the sake of mankind You were born of a virgin;* through Your death on the cross You conquered death;* and through Your resurrection You revealed yourself as God.* O merciful Lord, do not disdain those whom You have created with Your own hands,* but show forth Your love for mankind.* Accept the intercession which the Mother, who bore You, makes in our behalf.** O Saviour, save Your despairing people!

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

All the choirs of the hierarchs, mighty luminaries of the Ukrainian Church!* As faithful followers of the apostles and as good shepherds,* you faithfully preserved the flock entrusted to you;* you led it along paths of truth and carefully fed it with spiritual food,* not hesitating to give up your lives for your sheep.* Therefore, together with St. Josaphat, the priest-martyr,* implore the Chief Shepherd, Christ God,* for Ukrainian nation’s faithfulness to His commandments* and great mercy for our souls.

Venerable fathers of the Monastery of the Caves, Anthony and Theodosius,* the first flowers of the Ukrainian Church,* and all the countless righteous ones who followed after their steps,* dedicating their lives to God!* You shine forth as an example of Christian perfection,* and you teach us by prayer and self-denial* to configure ourselves to Christ God for the salvation of our souls.* Therefore, implore the good God, that we may be made worthy of your intercession,* and that together with you, through prayer and sacrifice,* we may obtain for Christ’s Church and our Ukrainian nation* mercy and God’s bountiful blessings.

Lytia, In Tone 2

Let us extol today the illustrious and sacred memory* of our first God-inspired rulers and clergy,* who delivered us from the darkness of idolatry* and brought us to the Sun of Justice, Christ our God.

May the supplications of the ancient righteous ones of the land of Ukraine* and the sufferings of our confessors of the holy Gospel* rise as fragrant incense before the throne of the Most High;* for it is better by the sacrifices that the Church of Christ in Ukraine* is regenerated and strengthened.

In Tone 5, Glory…

Let a mighty ‘Hosanna’ resound throughout heaven today* and the golden fields of our wide steppes* from the prayerful hearts of the millions of our faithful* who glorify and thank You, O gracious and almighty God,* for the most precious gift, the Christian faith and the tablets of Christian holiness,* which our ancestors received from Your great goodness* and passed on to us for the sanctification and salvation of our souls.

Now…

You are the temple, the gate, the palace, and royal throne, O most pure Virgin.* Through you my Saviour, Christ the Lord,* appeared as the Sun of Justice to those who were sleeping in darkness,* desiring to enlighten those He had created in His own image.* Therefore, O all-gracious One, with a mother’s confidence,* pray to Him unceasingly that our souls may be saved.

Aposticha, In Tone 3

O Christ, Who darkened the sun by Your passion* and enlightened all creation by Your resurrection,* accept our evening prayer; for You love mankind.

The Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty. Robed is the Lord, and girt about with strength.

O Lord, Your life-giving Resurrection has enlightened the entire universe* and has revived Your creation which lay in corruption.* Therefore, we, who have been released from the curse of Adam, cry out to You:* Almighty Lord, glory to You!

For He has made the world firm, which shall not be moved.

O God, although in Your divine nature You are unchangeable,* yet in Your human nature You underwent change by suffering in the flesh.* All creation was prostrate with fear* when it saw You hanging on the Cross,* and it groaned in sorrow as it sang the praises of Your long-suffering.* But You descended into Hades and arose on the third day,* granting life and great mercy to the world.

Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, for length of days.

You suffered death, O Christ, to deliver mankind from death.* And when You arose from the dead on the third day,* You enlightened the world* and resurrected all who acknowledge You as God.

In Tone 4, Glory…

We glorify the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,* and render thanks to You, the Triune God of one essence,* for the precious treasure which You deigned to give* to our holy princes and teachers,* holy priests and monks, confessors and martyrs for the Church of Christ.* Their struggles are the source of our strength.* Therefore, by honouring their memory we, together with them,* beseechingly cry out:* Lord, grant that we may all be one,* that all the children of Rus’-Ukraine may extol You* with one heart and one voice, the only true God,* and become worthy of Your eternal bliss* in the light that knows no evening.

Now…

O most pure Virgin, hear the petitions of your servants.* Remove the burdens which oppress us,* and deliver us from our sorrows;* for you are the only firm and constant support on whom we rely.* O Mother of God, never permit us who call upon you* to be overwhelmed by our cares.* Hasten to fulfill the supplications of all who, in faith, cry out to you:* Rejoice, O Lady, helper of all mankind,* the joy, the refuge, and the salvation of our souls.

4-а Неділя по Зісланні Св. Духа;

Troparia and Kontakia

July 10; Our Venerable Father Anthony of the Monastery of the Caves in Kiev

GREAT VESPERS

Kathisma Reading
“Blessed is the man…” is sung.

At Psalm 140

In Tone 1

  1. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

When the love of God took possession of you, venerable Anthony,* you began to look upon the enticements of the world as vain.* For this reason you left your homeland and settled on the Holy Mountain.* There, among the father, your virtues have shone forth like a light.* Pray to Christ, Whom you have served already from your youth,* for the enlightenment and salvation of our souls.

  1. Let Yours ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

  1. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

When you were enflamed with the love of Christ* you despised the world – its wisdom and passing glory -* and led an ascetic life, like an angel.* For this, God counted you worthy of the glory of the angels.* Now standing with them before Christ,* pray, Anthony, for the enlightenment and salvation of our souls.

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

  1. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

When you, father, received into your heart the love of God,* you then entered a dark cave, as though it were a bridal chamber.* There you enriched yourself with knowledge, which is beyond all understanding:* To behold the future as though it were present,* and to openly preach it to all.* Pray to Christ, to Whom you have consecrated yourself, since your youth,* for enlightenment and salvation of our souls.

  1. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Your feastday has arrived, O God-bearer.* Brighter than the sun, your memory enlightens all who come to you in faith.* O Anthony, intercessor for our souls, your soul is fragrant with immortality* and you pour out healing for our souls.

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

O wonder-worker Anthony, you subdued the sensual and bodily passions* with the bridle of abstinence.* On earth you displayed angelic zeal* in subjecting bodily lusts to the spirit.* In the heavenly courts where you now dwell,* offer prayers for our souls.

  1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

O blessed Anthony, by discarding the old self and its urges,* and by truly clothing yourself with Christ,* you laid a foundation for virtue.* And so, after repelling many hostile attacks,* you became a guide for monks, O venerable one.* Offer your prayers for the salvation of our souls.

In Tone 6, Glory…

Having witnessed your austere life and ascetic endeavours,* the fathers of the Holy mountain, under the inspiration of God,* sent you back to your homeland, saying:* Go, son, so that, there, the blind may learn about God.* Having returned, venerable father Anthony,* you enlightened your entire homeland* and became the head of community of ascetics* whom you have drawn to Christ.* Beseech Christ for us, that He protect us from the enemies of our souls* and grant us all salvation.

Now…

Who would not call you blessed, O Virgin most holy?* Who would not sing a hymn of praise* to the glory of your giving birth without pain or travail?* The Only-begotten Son Himself,* begotten of the Father before all ages,* was made flesh out of you in a manner* that cannot be explained, O Woman most pure!* And for our sake, He Who is God by nature* assumed the nature of a man.* He is not divided into two persons;* He is understood to have two natures* without commixion or confusion.* O noble and blessed Woman,* intercede with Him that He may mercy on our souls.

Aposticha

In Tone 1

O venerable father, you followed in the footsteps of the great Anthony.* Seeking solitude, he dwelt in the desert,* so as to be counted worthy to converse with the angels,* while you shut yourself up in an underground cave,* in order to contemplate the unspeakable world.* Because you have imitated his life, you took his name.* Now that you stand before the Holy Trinity,* pray for the salvation of our souls.

Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His faithful.

Like a lampstand shining in a dark place,* you have shone forth, O father Anthony!* And like the prophetic palm tree you flourished in the house of God,* offering yourself, in an unbloody sacrifice,* as blessed fruit to the Master.* Therefore, having gathered together,* we always extol you as is fitting.

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in His commandments.

Because your life resembled that of the great ascetic Anthony,* in God’s plan you were called Anthony,* for, having gathered together many monks,* who observed your teachings, you led them to God.* Therefore, as a co-dweller of the monastics and righteous,* with whom you now stand before the Holy Trinity,* pray for all those who with hymns glorify your glorious departure.

In Tone 6, Glory…

By zealous prayer and great faith you became likened to the prophet Elijah.* For he drew from heaven fire to consume the sacrifices,* while you through prayers drew fire from heaven* to prepare and purify the site where you desired to build a glorious church* in honour of the Lady and Mother of God.* Therefore, we extol you as a fellow-monastic of the ascetics and heir of the prophet* and implore you: Pray to Christ for the salvation of our souls.

Now…

Christ the Lord, our Creator and Redeemer,* came forth from your womb, O most pure Virgin.* He clothed Himself in our human flesh* to set us free from the original curse of Adam.* Therefore, O Mary, we praise you, without ceasing,* as the true Virgin Mother of God,* and we sing with the angels:* Rejoice, O Lady, advocate, protector, and salvation of our souls.

Troparia

In Tone 4
Leaving behind worldly tumult,* O venerable Father Anthony,* in keeping with the gospel you turned your back on the world,* and leading a life equal to that of angels you attained to the calm haven of Mount Athos* from whence you came to the Mount of Kiev* with the Fathers’ blessing* and living there an arduous life you enlightened your fatherland,* pointing the way into the Kingdom on high to a multitude of monks and nuns* and thus lead your homeland to Christ.** Pay to Him that He save our souls.

Glory… Now…
O Mother of God, the mystery hidden from all eternity* and unknown even to the angels,* was revealed through you to those on earth:* God took on our human nature* and united it to His divine nature in a perfect but unconfused union.* Then, He willingly accepted the cross for our sake* and thereby raised again the first created man,** and saved our souls from death.

Kontakion, Tone 8: Cleaving to God,* whom you loved from your childhood above all else,* you followed Him lovingly with your whole heart,* O Father Anthony.* Scorning this passing world as a trifle* you made your dwelling a cave in the earth.* There you fought well against the unseen enemy’s snares* and shone like the sun to the ends of the earth.* From whence you passed joyfully to heaven’s mansions* and stand now with angels at the Master’s throne.* There we ask you to remember those who feast your memory* that we may cry to you: Rejoice, O Anthony, our Father.

“Blessed is the man…” is sung.

At Psalm 140

In Tone 4

  1. Lead my soul forth from prison* that I may give thanks to Your name.

We never cease to adore Your life-giving Cross, O Christ our God,* And we glorify Your resurrection on the third day.* For You, Almighty One, have thereby restored the corrupted nature of all* and reopened the way to heaven,* since You alone are gracious and You love mankind.

  1. The just shall gather around me* when You have been good to me.

O Saviour, You have absolved the penalty of disobedience,* committed through the tree of Eden,* by willingly being nailed to the tree of the Cross.* As Almighty God, You descended into Hades* and broke asunder the bonds of death.* We, therefore, venerate Your resurrection from the dead,* and joyfully cry out to You:* Almighty Lord, glory to You!

  1. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

O Lord, You have battered down the gates of Hades,* and by Your death You have dissolved the realm of death.* You have freed mankind from corruption,* bestowing life, incorruption, and Your great mercy upon the world.

  1. Let Yours ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

Come, all you people,* let us sing the praises of our Saviour’s resurrection on the third day.* For we have, thereby, been delivered from the invincible bonds of Hades,* and we have received incorruption, together with eternal life.* Therefore, we cry out to You* after Your crucifixion, burial, and resurrection:* Save us by Your resurrection, for You love mankind.

  1. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

O Saviour, with the angels we sing the praises of Your resurrection on the third day.* For the very ends of the universe have, thereby, been enlightened,* and we have been saved from the deceit of the enemy.* Therefore, we cry out to You,* Almighty Saviour, Giver of Life, and Lover of Mankind:* Save us by Your resurrection.

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

O Christ our God, You have demolished the brazen gates of Hades.* You have broken asunder the bonds of death,* and lifted up the fallen human race.* Therefore, we cry out with one accord:* O Lord, Who arose from the dead, glory to You!

  1. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

O Lord, Your birth from the Father is timeless and eternal;* Your incarnation from the Virgin is beyond the understanding of all,* and beyond the expression of our words.* Your descent into Hades and victory over Death* caused Satan and his angels to tremble with fear.* Your resurrection on the third day* brought to mankind incorruption and great mercy.

In Tone 1

  1. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Blessed and divinely wise Aquila,* the great Paul, that sun upon earth,* sent you forth as a bright beam of light into the world,* to illumine with the clear radiance of your words,* the people of old who were in peril* in the night of ignorance!

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

Aquila, preacher of God,* richly illumined with the bright rays of the divine Spirit,* your pure heart destroyed the fierce Hellenic darkness* through the grace of God,* revealing itself to be truly radiant!

  1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

Those who hasten to your divine temple, Aquila,* and pray there to you with faith* are delivered by the holiness of your prayers* from every sickness, sorrow and misfortune.* Through your holy intercession they approach the presence of God!

In Tone 4, Glory… Now…

O Mother of God, because of You David the Prophet* became an ancestor of God;* he foretold and sang a joyous hymn of praise* and cried out to Him who worked wonders in you:* “The Queen stood at your right hand.”* God revealed you as a life-giving mother,* when He chose to be incarnate of you without a father.* He renewed in man His image which the passions had corrupted.* He found the lost sheep in the mountains, carried it on His shoulders,* offered it to the Father, generously numbered it among the powers of heaven,* and saved the whole world, since He is Christ of great and rich mercy.

Aposticha

In Tone 4

In being lifted upon the Cross, O Lord,* You abolished the curse which we had inherited from our ancestors.* By going down into Hades,* You freed from eternal captivity those imprisoned there,* and granted incorruption to the human race.* We, therefore, praise Your life-giving and redeeming resurrection.

The Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty. Robed is the Lord, and girt about with strength.

By hanging on the Cross, O Almighty One,* You shook the whole creation to its foundations.* When You Yourself were laid in the grave,* You raised to life those who had been lying in the graves,* and You granted life and incorruption to mankind.* We, therefore, praise and glorify Your resurrection on the third day.

For He has made the world firm, which shall not be moved.

O Christ, the lawless people showed their ingratitude to You, their Benefactor,* by delivering You to Pilate who condemned you to be crucified.* But You willingly suffered death and burial;* and, as God, You rose by Your own power on the third day,* granting us everlasting life and great mercy.

Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, for length of days.

The women, shedding bitter tears, came to see You in Your tomb;* and not finding Your body, they lamented, saying:* O Saviour and King of All, how were You stolen?* What place holds Your life-bearing body?* An angel answered them, saying:* Do not weep, but go and proclaim that the Lord is risen,* filling our hearts with joy;* for He alone is most compassionate.

Glory… Now…

O most pure Virgin, hear the petitions of your servants.* Remove the burdens which oppress us,* and deliver us from our sorrows;* for you are the only firm and constant support on whom we rely.* O Mother of God, never permit us who call upon you* to be overwhelmed by our cares.* Hasten to fulfil the supplications of all who, in faith, cry out to you:* Rejoice, O Lady, helper of all mankind,* the joy, the refuge, and the salvation of our souls.

Troparia

When the disciples of the Lord learned from the angel* the glorious news of the resurrection* and cast off the ancestral condemnation,* they proudly told the apostles:* “Death has been plundered!* Christ our God is risen,*granting to the world great mercy.”

Holy Apostle, Aquila, intercede with the merciful God* to grant our souls forgiveness of sins.

Now…
We sing your praises, O Virgin;* for, as the Mother of God, you always intercede for the salvation of the human race.* It is from you that our God and Your Son took flesh. * Then, by suffering the passion on the Cross,* and out of love for mankind, He delivered us from corruption.

  1. The just shall gather around me* when You have been good to me.

O Christ, Who granted resurrection to mankind,* You were led like a lamb to the slaughter.* Then the princes of Hades were struck with terror* as they saw the gates of their tearful domain being lifted up;* for Christ, the King of Glory, entered therein* and exclaimed to those in chains: Go forth from here!* And to those in darkness: Go forth into the light!

  1. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

What a great wonder!* The Creator of invisible beings suffered in the flesh for mankind,* and rose from the dead as immortal.* Come, therefore, all you nations and adore Him;* for through His compassion we have been freed from the snares of the Devil,* and we have learned to praise the one God in three Persons.

  1. Let Yours ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

We offer to You our evening worship,* O Light Whom the darkness of night can never extinguish.* For in these latter days Your radiance has appeared to the world,* shining in Your flesh as light reflected in a mirror.* Your brilliance has descended even to the depths of Hades and dissolved its gloom.* O Lord, Giver of Light, glory to You;* for You have shown the radiance of Your Resurrection to all the nations.

  1. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

Let us glorify Christ, the Author of our Salvation;* for by His Resurrection from the dead,* the world has been delivered from the deception of Satan.* The choirs of angels rejoice as the treachery of evil spirits vanishes.* Fallen Adam arises, and the Devil is vanquished.

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

Those who guarded the tomb of Christ* were told by the evil men who hired them:* Take this silver and keep silent.* Tell no one of the Resurrection of Christ;* rather tell everyone that while you were sleeping His body was stolen.* But who has ever heard of a body being stolen,* a body which had already been anointed?* Why would anyone take a body from the grave naked,* and leave the burial shroud in the tomb?* Do not deceive yourselves, O people of Judea.* Study the teachings of the Prophets,* and you will come to understand that Jesus Christ is Almighty God,* and truly the Saviour of the world.

In Tone 6

  1. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

O Word and lover of Mankind,* infinite and beyond description in Your taking flesh for our sake,* the nobles assembly of Fathers proclaimed that You are both perfect man and perfect God,* one person in two perfect natures with two perfect wills.* Therefore, we profess that You are one God with the Father and the Holy Spirit.* We sing a hymn of praise to the Fathers, and we adore You.

  1. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

O glorious Fathers of the Councils,* you demonstrated that Pyrrhus, Sergius, and Onuphrius,* Dioscorus, and Nestorius were in error* concerning the doctrines of Christ.* You save the flock by teaching the true principle* that Christ is one divine person in two natures.* This Christ we adore as perfect man and perfect God,* one with the Father and the Holy Spirit.* O holy Fathers, we honour you and sing to you a hymn of praise.

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

The Fathers of the Councils, inspired by God,* declare and explain that in Christ* there is a divine act and a divine will,* uncreated and infinite:* the act and will of the Son of God.* There is also a human act and a human will:* those of the Son of Man.* Thus, they proclaim that Christ is one divine person having two natures,* the one is divine and the other is human.* Therefore, we the faithful honour these Fathers every year* and glorify Christ who glorified them.

  1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

The Fathers of the Councils proclaim to us today* that the eternal Trinity is one God and one Lord.* They explain the Trinity is of one nature,* consubstantial, of one will and one act,* not divided nor shared but existing in the simplicity of God’s being.* They define that this will and act of God* had no beginning and will never have and end.* Therefore, we the faithful glorify these Fathers* as the equals of the Apostles,* for they taught all people the true doctrine of God.

In Tone 6, Glory…

Let us honour today those mystical trumpets of the Spirit,* namely the God-mantled Fathers,* who speaking of divine things,* sang in the midst of the Church a hymn in unison,* teaching that the Trinity is one,* not differing in substance or Godhead,* refuting Arius and defending the orthodox faith.* They always intercede with the Lord* to have mercy on our souls.

In Tone 5, Now…

A symbol of the undefiled Virgin and bride* was revealed in the Red Sea.* There, Moses divided the waters;* here, Gabriel is the messenger of the miracle.* There, the Israelites crossed the deep and their feet were not even wet;* here, the Virgin gives birth to Christ without human seed.* There, the sea remained uncrossed after the passing of Israel;* here, the immaculate remained incorrupt after giving birth to Emmanuel.* Therefore, O immortal God, who appeared in the flesh as true Man,* have mercy on us!

O Christ our Saviour,* we lift up our voices to glorify You.* For, in Your love for mankind,* You became incarnate without leaving heaven;* You accepted the Cross and death;* You cast down the gates of Hades;* and on the third day You arose from the dead* for the salvation of our souls.

The Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty. Robed is the Lord, and girt about with strength.

O Giver of Life,* streams of forgiveness, life, and salvation* poured forth from Your pierced side upon us all.* By accepting physical death, You granted us immortality;* by lying in the tomb, You freed us from Hades,* and as God, by rising from the dead,* You raised us with Yourself in glory.* Therefore, we cry out to You:* O Lover of mankind, glory to You!

For He has made the world firm, which shall not be moved.

O Lover of mankind,* Your crucifixion and descent into Hades are most wondrous.* For, as God, You thereby conquered the power of Hades,* and raised up in glory, with Yourself, those who were long imprisoned there.* You reopened Paradise and enabled them to enter.* Grant forgiveness of sins to us* who glorify Your Resurrection on the third day,* for You alone are all-merciful.

Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, for length of days.

O Lover of mankind,* You accepted suffering in the flesh* and rose from the dead on the third day.* Therefore, heal the passions of our flesh,* raise us from our dreadful iniquities, and save us.

In Tone 4, Glory…

O holy Fathers of the Councils,* you are the faithful keepers of the Apostles’ traditions.* By proclaiming that the three persons of the Holy Trinity* are one and consubstantial,* you refuted the blasphemy of Arius.* By teaching that the Holy Spirit is a distinct person,* one with the Father and the Son,* you put Macedonius, Severus and other heretics to shame.* Therefore, we beseech you to intercede for us,* preserving us from heresy and error* and keeping our lives blameless in God’s sight.

Now…

Troparia and Kontakia

  1. Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord;* O Lord, hear my voice!

O Lord, where can we sinners flee from You,* for You are present in all creation?* You are present in heaven, for it is Your dwelling place.* Your power prevails in Hades where You conquered Death.* O Master, Your sustaining hand touches even the depths of the sea.* Where, then, can we take refuge except in You?* We, therefore, prostrate ourselves before You and pray:* O Lord, risen from the dead, have mercy on us.

  1. Let Yours ears be attentive* to the voice of my prayer.

We exult in Your Cross, O Christ,* and we sing the glory of Your Resurrection.* For You are our God, and we have no other Lord but You.

  1. If You mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand?* But with You forgiveness is that You may be revered.

Glory to Your might, O Lord,* for You have conquered the power of death.* You have renewed us through Your Cross,* granting us life and incorruption.

  1. I have waited for You as You have commanded; my soul patiently relies on Your promise,* for it has trusted in the Lord.

We forever bless the Lord and praise His resurrection,* for by suffering crucifixion,* He has destroyed death by His death.

  1. From the morning watch until night* let Israel trust in the Lord.

By Your death and burial, O Lord,* You broke asunder the bonds of Hades;* and by Your resurrection from the dead,* You enlightened the whole world.* We, therefore, exclaim: Glory to You, O Lord!

In Tone 1

  1. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;* and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

By a choice determined by God,* you were honored by being preferred to serve the needs of the saints!* You were full of divine wisdom, illumination and grace!* Now, glorious ones, you ever dwell in the heavens,* rejoicing with the angels.

  1. Praise the Lord, all the nations;* proclaim His glory, all you people.

By the grace of the Spirit,* you were revealed to the world as bright lamps* shining richly with the light of knowledge,* ending the darkness of wickedness!* Having been translated, apostles,* you make your dwelling near the unapproachable Light!

  1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us;* eternally will His truth endure.

Let us praise the most holy Nicanor,* Parmenas and Timon,* and with them let us honor the divine Prochorus,* for these men fulfilled the commands of the Word!* They enrich the doubting,* and are most ardent intercessors with our God!

In Tone 6, Glory… Now…

Who would not call you blessed, O Virgin most holy?* Who would not sing a hymn of praise* to the glory of your giving birth without pain or travail?* The Only-begotten Son Himself,* begotten of the Father before all ages,* was made flesh out of you in a manner* that cannot be explained, O Woman most pure!* And for our sake, He Who is God by nature* assumed the nature of a man.* He is not divided into two persons;* He is understood to have two natures* without commixion or confusion.* O noble and blessed Woman,* intercede with Him that He may mercy on our souls.

Aposticha

In Tone 6

O Christ our Saviour,* the angels in heaven sing the praises of Your Resurrection;* make us on earth also worthy* to extol You with a pure heart.

The Lord reigns, He is clothed in majesty. Robed is the Lord, and girt about with strength.

Almighty God, You destroyed the brazen gates and bars of Hades,* and raised up fallen mankind.* Therefore, with one accord, we cry out:* O Lord, risen from the dead, glory to You!

For He has made the world firm, which shall not be moved.

Christ willed to renew us from our corruption of old* by being nailed to a cross and placed in a tomb.* When the women came to anoint His body they tearfully cried out:* O, what sorrow afflicts us!* O Saviour of All, how could You consent to occupy a grave?* If you truly willed this, then why did You allow Your body to be stolen?* How were You removed?* What place now conceals Your life-bearing body?* O Lord, appear to us as You promised* and put an end to out tears.* As they were lamenting, an angel appeared and cried out to them:* Do not weep, but tell the Apostles that the Lord is risen,* granting sanctification and great mercy to the world.

Holiness befits Your house, O Lord, for length of days.

O Christ, You were crucified of Your free will,* and by Your burial You imprisoned Death.* As God, You rose in glory on the third day,* granting life and great mercy to the world.

Glory… Now…

Christ the Lord, our Creator and Redeemer,* came forth from your womb, O most pure Virgin.* He clothed Himself in our human flesh* to set us free from the original curse of Adam.* Therefore, O Mary, we praise you, without ceasing,* as the true Virgin Mother of God,* and we sing with the angels:* Rejoice, O Lady, advocate, protector, and salvation of our souls.

Troparia

In Tone 6
Angelic powers were upon Your tomb* and the guards became like dead men;* Mary stood before Your tomb* seeking Your most pure body.* You captured Hades without being overcome by it.* You met the Virgin and granted life.* O Lord, risen from the dead,* glory to You!

In Tone 3
Holy apostles, intercede with the merciful God* to grant to our souls forgiveness of sins.

Now…
We sing your praises, O Virgin;* for, as the Mother of God, you always intercede for the salvation of the human race.* It is from you that our God and Your Son took flesh. * Then, by suffering the passion on the Cross,* and out of love for mankind, He delivered us from corruption.
