Sts. Peter and Paul Parish – Mundare
PastorRev. John Sembrat, OSBMAbout Sts. Peter and Paul Parish – Mundare
Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Mundare is one of the most important Ukrainian Catholic communities in Alberta, rooted in the arrival of the first pioneers around 1898 and shaped by the missionary work of the Basilian Fathers. Under Fr. Platonid Filas and later pastors, the parish grew into a strong centre of worship, family life, and Ukrainian identity, serving a wide region and helping strengthen the Catholic faith among Ukrainian settlers. The first church was built in 1910, later enlarged in 1928, and became widely known for its beauty, its Ukrainian architectural character, and the dedication of the many families who supported its growth.
The parish also became a major cultural centre. Organizations such as the Apostleship of Prayer, Marian League, Sisterhood of St. Barbara, and the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood supported parish life, while youth, families, and clergy worked together to preserve faith and tradition. Mundare is also home to the Basilian Fathers Museum, established to preserve the history, culture, and religion of the Beaver Lake–Mundare settlement and the early Basilian missionaries. The museum opened in 1957 and later moved into its current facility in 1991; today it holds artefacts, archives, rare books, and thousands of photographs that tell the story of Ukrainian settlement and the growth of the Church in Canada.
