About Nativity of the BVM Parish – Chipman

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Chipman was founded by the early Ukrainian settlers who arrived in the area in the 1890s. The first church was built near Chipman in 1900, and after disputes among parishioners, a new church was completed in town in 1916 on six acres of land. Blessed by Bishop Nykyta Budka in 1918, the church became the heart of a thriving parish community with a rich tradition of worship, music, and cultural life.

Over the years, the parish developed a strong identity through its iconostasis, choir, cemetery, and National Hall, as well as through organizations such as the BUCC, UCWLC, UCYC, the theatre group Zorya, and the Taras Shevchenko Society. The parish also produced important vocations and remained a meaningful place of faith and service for generations, even though it is no longer served on a regular basis.
