Youth Nights at St. Nicholas Parish: Faith, Friends, and Pizza in Edmonton

Youth gatherings at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Edmonton have already brought young people together for two evenings filled with prayer, fellowship, joy, and a deeper exploration of faith. After all, who understands youth better than youth themselves? That is why seminarian Marko Koval from Holy Spirit Seminary in Edmonton organises and leads these monthly gatherings, while parish priest Fr. Slavko Dumeč joins in prayer, discussion, and offers his full support for this growing ministry.

“Why Am I Here? Do I Need the Church?”

The first youth evening at St. Nicholas Parish focused on the big questions many young people ask: “Why am I here? Do I need the Church?” The night began with prayer, inviting everyone to place their questions and worries before God. Interactive icebreakers helped break down shyness and build a sense of community, reminding participants that the Church is not just a building, but people who journey together in faith.

Through short reflections and open conversation, the group looked at why belonging to a community matters and how a personal relationship with God can shape everyday life. Special attention was given to the Holy Mysteries (Sacraments), which unite us with God and with one another, especially through Confession and the Eucharist. The evening closed with time for fellowship and games, giving youth space to laugh, talk, and form friendships in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

“How Do I Read the Bible, and Why Does It Matter?”

The second gathering explored another essential topic: “Sacred Scripture: How to read the Bible and why does it matter?” Once again, the evening began with prayer, followed by a short presentation on how God speaks to us through His Word. Youth were encouraged to see the Bible not as a distant, difficult book, but as a living word that can guide them in questions, choices, and struggles.

A lively discussion allowed participants to share their experiences and challenges with reading Scripture. Practical tips were offered on where to start, how to pray with the Bible, and how to connect what they read with real life. Of course, no youth night would be complete without food, so everyone enjoyed pizza and a fun “Bible Trivia” game that helped reinforce what they had learned while keeping the atmosphere joyful and engaging.

Upcoming Youth Night: Prayer and Film on April 18

The next youth evening at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Parish promises to be just as meaningful and fun. On April 18, all youth are warmly invited to join seminarian Marko Koval for a special evening of prayer and film. The program will include a Moleben service followed by a screening of Exodus: Gods and Kings.

From 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., young people will have the chance to gather in church for prayer, watch a thought-provoking film, and take part in conversations about faith, freedom, and God’s action in our lives. It is a wonderful opportunity to grow in faith, share meaningful conversations, and build friendships in a safe, welcoming, and uplifting environment.
