St. Josaphat Cathedral Seeks Choir Director
St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral is seeking a Choir Director to lead and enrich the Ukrainian and English musical life of the parish community.

St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Edmonton is inviting applications for the part-time position of Choir Director.
This is an opportunity for a dedicated and skilled church musician to support the liturgical life of the parish through prayerful, vibrant worship rooted in the Eastern traditions of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. The Cathedral is seeking someone who feels called to lead and enrich both Ukrainian and English choral music within the parish community.
The Choir Director will work closely with clergy, parish leadership, and staff to help foster worship that is both reverent and welcoming. In addition to musical leadership, the role includes planning, communication, and collaboration in support of the parish’s broader liturgical and community life.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the 25-member SATB a cappella choir for the 11:00 a.m. Divine Liturgy in Ukrainian twice per month
- Hold choir rehearsals twice per month
- Prepare and lead the choir for major liturgical celebrations throughout the year, including the Feast of St. Josaphat, Christmas Eve, Holy Friday Vespers and Shroud Service, Easter Paschal Matins, Easter Sunday Divine Liturgy, Thomas Sunday, First Holy Communion, and the Sunday of the Parish Annual General Meeting
- Serve as cantor at the 11:00 a.m. Sunday Divine Liturgy when the choir is not scheduled to sing
- Select, interpret, arrange, and adapt appropriate liturgical music for the choir’s needs and skill level
- Support the musical and spiritual growth of choristers through regular preparation and leadership
- Prepare choir schedules in accordance with the liturgical year and parish calendar
- Prepare bulletin announcements related to choir life and liturgical music
- Attend monthly Parish Council meetings and provide reports in coordination with the Liturgical Music Director
- Maintain the choral library, update choir books, and communicate regularly with choir members about rehearsals, services, and parish events
- Collaborate with clergy, Parish Council, the Liturgical Music Director, and office staff in planning liturgical services and events
- Prepare the choir for the annual Koliada Concert and other appropriate choral events
- Encourage participation in parish social events that strengthen fellowship within the choir and the wider parish family
The Cathedral is seeking a practicing Ukrainian Catholic with knowledge and understanding of the Divine Liturgy, experience directing choirs, and the ability to work well with volunteers. Preference will be given to candidates with formal music education or substantial musical experience. Important assets for this role include vocal coaching ability, piano proficiency, knowledge of Ukrainian and English choral repertoire, and fluency in both English and Ukrainian.
The ideal candidate will also bring strong leadership, organizational ability, patience, and the ability to inspire both new and experienced singers.
