Edmonton, February 9, 2018 – The faculty of Newman Theological College received the news of the decision to relocate Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Seminary to the Basilian House of Studies in Edmonton with great excitement and joy. The College has had excellent relations and collaborations with the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Sheptytsky Institute. For many years we have offered some courses in Eastern Catholic studies and welcomed several qualified members of the local Eparchy as lecturers on our faculty.

Prior to this decision we have had discussions with the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute about ways to collaborate to enhance educational opportunities for students interested in Eastern Christian Studies, particularly through the mutual recognition of courses. We look forward to developing even deeper relations with the Sheptytsky Institute and all of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchies in Canada as we work with the team of Holy Spirit Seminary to offer a program of studies that will meet the needs of seminarians for the Ukrainian Catholic Churches in Canada.

We recognize that transitions in an institution’s life present significant challenges and commit to working with our partners to help make this a positive experience for everyone who is affected. As a College, we join with the Bishops in making their prayer from the Divine Liturgy our own: “Let us go forth in peace. In the name of the Lord!”

In Christ Jesus,
