On Saturday, October 1, 2011 a cantoring course was held in Edmonton, sponsored by the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton and hosted by St. Nicholas parish. The course was attended by over twenty participants who were divided into two groups: a beginner class and an advanced class. The beginner class, led by Dr. Melanie Turgeon, concentrated on how to sing the ordinary responses to the Divine Liturgy, but also looked at the structure of the service, proper and changeable parts, as well as basic singing techniques. The advanced class, led by Fr. Danylo Kuc, discussed some points concerning the historical and geographical setting of the Galician chant used in the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church and then focused on the singing of the Resurrectional Tones, including the prokeimena. The course concluded with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy on the occasion of the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God, at which the students from both groups had the opportunity to demonstrate their newly honed cantoring abilities. Both participants and organizers expressed interest in offering cantoring courses regularly throughout the year.
