Dormition of Our Most Holy Lady,
the Mother of God (Theotokos) and Ever-Virgin Mary

Troparion (Tone 1): In giving birth you retained your virginity, in falling asleep you did not abandon the world, O Mother of God. You passed into life, for you are the Mother of Life, and by your prayers you deliver our souls from death.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and for ever and ever. Amen.

Kontakion (Tone 2): The tomb and death could not hold the Mother of God, unceasing in her intercession and an unfailing hope of patronage, for, as the Mother of Life she was transferred to life by Him Who had dwelt in her ever-virgin womb.

Prokimenon (Tone 3): My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour (Lk 1:46-47).

verse: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour (Lk 1:46-47).

Epistle: (Phil 2:5-11) (Feast)

Brethren, have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance,he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Alleluia (Tone 8): Rise up, Lord, to the place of Your rest, You and the ark of Your holiness (Ps 131:8).

verse: The Lord swore an oath to David; and He will not go back on His word (Ps 131:11).

Gospel: (Lk 10:38-42, 11:27-28) (Feast)
Now as they went on their way, he entered a village; and a woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.”

As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!” But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Instead of “It is truly…”: Seeing the pure one’s falling asleep, angels marvelled in wonder how the Virgin could ascend from earth to heaven.

Irmos (Tone 1): O pure Virgin, in you are conceived the bounds of nature, for childbirth remains virginal and death is betrothed to life. Virgin after childbearing and alive after death, O Mother of God, never cease to save your inheritance.

Communion Verse: I will take the chalice of salvation; and I will call upon the name of the Lord (Ps 115:13). Alleluia! (3x)
